I know, I'm not the first to say it, but I just think what U2 had between 1987 and 1993 was really, really special. They got to a place where few bands had been before or since. Just look at they managed to do in those six years...

Not to mention they fit the Joshua Tree Tour, Lovetown, AND ZooTV into these six years too!

And...even their album/single art was the best and most creative its ever been!

So join me in appreciating U2 1987-1993

Excellent thread!

87-93 was a great era. Was definately U2's peak. Even the b sides of this era were better than anything U2 have put out recently. We should be celebrating 84-93 though, it would be remiss to leave out the classic Unforgettable Fire. Unforgettable Fire was really their first masterpiece

Fuck it, let's celebrate 76-05.

It has all of their best work. They haven't released anything worthwhile since.

You're missing She's A Mystery To Me in your list.

Definitely their peak years. Creatively they were at the top of their game, and they knew it. The vast majority of my favorite songs come from this era.

Great thread!

Love all their stuff, but this is my favorite era as well.

Acthung Baby and Joshua Tree

A wonderful 7 year span that produced 2 of the greatest recordings in the history of rock N roll.

And those tours were OK as well.

Two of the greatest albums ever, one fantastically experimental album and one that pays a glowing tribute to American classic rock. Awesome!

But it is not just my favorite period for U2. I think that some of the best music of our time came out between the years 1985-95. Of course, that said, we all love the music we grew up with.. the most!

That is a beautiful collage, btw namkcuR! And come to think of it, I liked all their album covers upto and including ATYCLB. But That HTDAAB photo was :tsk: Hey, at least the CD itself looks dizzyingly attractive.

Well I think Pop's class too (and Passengers) so I'd have to stretch it a teeny bit further too but great topic, I totally agree, those songs are all fantastic!

Well... Ratlle and Hum era (wich is included in this thread) is not one of my favourites... But I still like the concerts of that era because they played a lot of songs from previous albums specially The Joshua Tree:drool:
But that album... I don't know... I really don't get it except for Van Diemen's Land, Heartland and All I want is you...

But the Zoo TV era... I worship it! I wish they did something like that again:)

It's all good, simply because that's when ZooTV happened.

But what is that Joshua Tree cover? Is it the American version or something? Because it looks absolutely horrible, probably the 2nd worst cover ever (the worst, of course, being the American version of Boy).

Joshua Tree:drool:
Rattle and Hum (apart from Love Rescue Me)
Achtung Baby
Zooropa

U2 were SO good from 87-93. Their best years easily.

 I think a lot of bands have peak years where they're just on some other planet, I think that's true for U2 during this time period. The amount of great stuff they put out, not to mention tours, is amazing imo.

amazing contrast from the beginning of this period till the end.

great, great stuff.

It's truly amazing that they packed that stuff into such a short period of time. The entire career of the band is incredible. Actually, if you stretched the era out to a mere ten years: 1987-1997, that pretty much defines every possible musical contrast and juxtaposition available to a group of four human beings. It's certainly a run that very few artists can touch.

If your old enough (or were young enough at the time) Boy to UF fire was a great 4 years. Boy 1980; October '81; War '83 and UF '84. Plus some amazing tours. Plus a few very good raw tours.
JT globalised and commercialised the band (not saying its a good or a bad thing) which meant nothing was going to be the same again.

As mentioned in U2&i, both a peak for the band and for Anton Corbijn. With the guys seemingly re-energized this year, let's hope for a repeat peak to come!

yup, that is the stretched and squished out of focus american version of the joshua tree cover.

hooray for botched album covers

there's a lithograph of the full, "widescreen" version of the photo, but it's like $500. oh, to have that hanging in the living room!

Don't forget 1987-93 also produced the Kylie and Jason classic 'Especially for you', the Firm's 'Star trekkin' and Prodigy with 'Charley says.' What an era!
