All 15 year olds were born!

But seriously, I had some thoughts about 15 years ago in comparison to today, especially how it relates to other bands that fans of U2 like. For example, Radiohead seems to be a popular group amongst U2 fans. I don't know if I'd know a Radiohead song if I heard one. I'm still liking the groups from the 80s.

So, journey with me, if you would, back to the year 1986. What groups were "lumped together" with U2? What other groups did U2 fans also enjoy? If the internet were around back then, what groups would we be discussing?

Some that I remember clearly U2 fans enjoying back then are:

The Alarm
The Call
Big Country
Simple Minds

and to a lesser extent,
Sinead O'Connor

Not only did we the fans enjoy these bands, but Bono was friends with these bands. There is, of course, that trio version of "Knocking On Heaven's Door" sung by Bono, Mike Peters (Alarm) and Stuart Adamson (Big Country).

not all u2 fans listen to radio head (me)...

u2 have a broader range of fans now. i listen to industrial music, and classical... and listen to u2.

and there are "fans" who like u2 just because they are popular.

back in 1986.. i was 6 yrs old... and didn't know anything about u2... but i really liked the beach boys, beetles, fleetwood mac, paul simon's graceland, and uhm.. pop songs that were popular in 1983 lol i listened to my mom's vinyl singles of FEED THE WORLD, wham, and spandau ballet, tina turner, cyndi lauper, donna summer, billy joel, and FLASH DANCE. and i also listened to *gasp* john denver.

I was a year old.

I absolutely love the bands of the 80's. My personal favorites are

The Cure
Depeche Mode
Oingo Boingo

I don't remember the 80's much, but those are some of the ones I would think would be clumped together, I may be way off track.

I love Simple Minds. At least, I love them some of the time and always like them. There were some great bands in the 80's. Some people just can't look past stuff like the hair. Duran Duran, so they may have looked silly--there is some amazing musicianship on their records. THE POLICE, for pity's sake. Bryan Adams did some great stuff in the 80's. Peter Gabriel too. I could go on.

I really didn't think the 90's were very good. Alternative has already sunk without a trace, despite all these silly music mags who put Nevermind at the top of "most important albums ever" lists. But I like some stuff by Radiohead and the Smashing Pumpkins (though in the latter's case especially, only a very limited amount of stuff). Jeff Buckley was amazing, but he's dead now...and when you listen to his music, it was really timeless. It probably resembled the 70's more than anything--certainly not much like the 90's.

By the way...I'm 22. So I discovered a lot of my favourite music years after the fact.
