hmmm ... no particular order, and most of the films i want to see i haven't yet (january is when i watch movies), but here's some i thought were great:

Jesus Camp
Little Miss Sunshine
Borat
Cache
The Departed
Superman Returns (a bit less than the sum of it's parts, but very nostalgic and his rescuing of the airplane in the beginning was the most thrilling 15 minutes of cinema all year)

can't wait to see: Dreamgirls, Volver, Little Children, The Queen, Letters from Iwo Jima, Half Nelson, Babel ... gosh, going to be a busy January

OK - my top ten (on planes and just due to being bored I've seen shitloads this year.)

1. Superman Returns - phenomenally entertaining. Storyline is weak, but it has everything you want in a popcorn movie - excellent effects, great stunts - and it's ace to have Supes back!

2. Casino Royale - just brilliant.

3. World Trade Centre (Center) - I will rate this one above United 93 simply because United 93 (while by far the far superior film) was an emotionally devastating film, whereas Oliver Stone's subdued, yet respectful take on what happened at Ground Zero affected me more - the crushed hope, the ultimate immense tragedy distilled to the tale of two people - I felt a bit manipulated, but still walked away with a better sense of the enormity of it all in regards to the people there. I can't quite word what I'm trying to say...

4. United 93

5. An Inconvenient Truth - well made, well presented, not 100% convinced it's as dire as Al wants me to believe it is...

6. Memoirs Of A Geisha - no where near as good as the book, but still a beautifully made movie. Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh are brilliant.

7. Little Miss Sunshine - just related to it so much.

8. Rent - (didn't get release here in Oz until March 2006) regardless of how Chris Columbus' hatchet job played out, you can't deny the power of Jon Larson's music. And Rosario as a drug addled stripper - H-O-T!

9. The Devil Wears Prada - I cant place her name - but the girl who played Miranda's other assistant (not Anen Hathaway) is brilliant. And Meryl of course.

10. Pirates Of The Carribean - Dead Man's Chest - just top fun. Stupid as all hell, but fun.

Well, I just watched Little Miss Sunshine, and I must say, it's a wonderful film. Not sure what it was exactly. Parts of it were out-of-this-world-hilarious, and others were absolutely heartbreaking. Overall, it leaves you with the impression that you just saw something truely special. It still needs some time to fully digest, but I'd reccoment this movie to anyone with a family! Haha.

I'll have to redo my Top 10 again.

1. V for Vendetta
2. The Prestige
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
4. Casino Royale
5. The Illusionist
6. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
7. Nacho Libre
8. Snakes on a Plane
9. Little Miss Sunshine
10. Thank You for Smoking

I saw the last 2 in the past week and loved them.

Best I watched :

Pirates 2
Da Vinci Code
Departed
Munich
X-men 3

Need to see yet :

Cassino Royale

Desesperaly need to see ..... :

V
Prestige

Biggest Disappointment :

Superman Returns

Hell even X-men 3 with things that really pissed me and disappointed , was IMO much better

With things like Spidey 3 , 300 and even Transformers , I'm sure 2007 will be a much better movies year

So far I'm adding Pursuit Of Happyness to my list, it is so inspiring and moving

I want to see Children Of Men- it got 4 stars in my local paper and they never give 4 stars. It's only playing at one theater in the city but hopefuly it will be out in the burbs soon. I worship Clive Owen.

I just watched A Sanner Darkly on DVD. This was seriously one of the best films of the year. I really regret missing this in theatres.

The retroscoping art-style is simply mind-blowing. I couldn't help but just stare at the film in a close-to-drooling state. Simply beautiful.

The story, adapted from a Philip K. Dick novel of the same name, it a twisting, trippy narcotics/paranoia science fiction plot, highlighted by some fantastic performances by Keanu Reeves, Wynona Ryder, Robert Downy Jr, Woody Harelson and Rory Cochrane. Richard Linklater did a fantastic job with this spiritual and artistic follow-up to his early masterpiece Waking Life.

Great, great film. The dialogue was often hilarious, and as the film escalates, the line between reality and halucination becomes increasingly blurred. Bloody fantastic overall. Everyone should see this. Consider me wholly impressed.

Robert Downey Jr. completely owned that movie, so did Rory Cochrane.

Keanu was better than usual and Winona Ryder was brilliant as always.

The animation was friggin' amazing, that was reason enough to see it.

The only downside is the movie drags in a middle and Woody Harrelson's character is annoying as shit.

Still a good movie like Lancemc said.

I agree, Downey's performance was probably the highlight of the film. He's an amazing actor, and this was even one of his better performances I've seen. I didn't find Woody's character annoying at all though. I loved the fucked-up chemistry between his character and Downey's. They were my favorite scenes in the movie.

finally saw Little Miss Sunshine on saturday
and I've watched it twice since then!
I had wanted to go watch it at the theater
but missed it since it was only out for a week
well since then I had lost interest and brushed it off as yet another quirky, indie film (which, well it ...was) ..
I'm so glad I did watch it after all, I seriously loved the movie, it had a great array of emotions throughout.... not to mention it was funny as fuck. Steve Carrel redeemed himself from the atrocious 40 year old virgin, his character was brilliant.. as was the rest of the cast.

This movie is a must see

I gotta agree. Little Miss Sunshine was absolutely fantastic. I wish it had been an hour longer it was so good. Carrel was really amazing in that role. Him and the grandfather gave me so many laughs, and the family dancing in the end was one of the most awkwardly, wonderfully, heart-warmingly halarious scenes I've seen in years.

I gotta disagree about the 40 Year Old Virgin though. I thought that was probably the single best comedy to come out in years. It had me in stitches the entire duration of the film. Different strokes I guess. Oh well.

^loved both movies. Everytime 40 Year Old Virgin is playing on cable, I tune in (if Maddy's not around) and laugh my arse off. Even at 2:00am in bed while hubby's asleep.

Man-o-lantern :lmao:

I tend to think that the more sobbing I do in the cinema, the more brilliant the film is  So, with that in mind, my very favourite films this year were

Brokeback Mountain (because it was so heartbreakingly good)

and

the New World (because it was so extraordinarily beautiful)

I haven't actually seen many movies this year, but I also really liked A History of Violence and The Squid and the Whale.

Really looking forward to seeing Babel and Little Children.

I'm adding "Volver" to my list,

No wonder the female cast won the collective "Best Actress" award at Cannes, this film had such great performances and memorable characters. And Penelope Cruz was a revelation - vibrant, alive and looking like the Spanish Sophia Loren. She should avoid Hollywood like plague and just stick to her native tongue.

Ah balls. I always forget V for Vendetta actually released here in 2006!! It's seriously one of my all-time favorite films if not my personal #1. I didn't put it on the list because I thought it came out in 2005. I know the film was originally set to release on NOvember 5th 2005, but because of the London Bombings they pushed it back.

In that case, V was definitely my favorite movie of the year!

My all time favorite movie list is probably something like this:

1. Pulp Fiction
2. V for Vendetta
3. The Shawshank Redemption

BUT, all 3 of those are constantly shifting the top 3 spots. But those are definitely my 3 favorite films.

Also, did the 40 Year Old Virgin come out in 2006? If it did, I'll also add that to my list for the year.

"She was a hoe...Fo show!"

Virgin came out July/August of '05.

There's another Judd Apatow movie coming out in '07 though: Knocked Up.

The guys who played Cal and David are in it plus Izzy from Grey's Anatomy.

I've been reading about the test screening and I've heard it's as funny as The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
