This simply is not true. The contract between Utd and Vodafone was for around 9mil a year which was the highest in the game when they signed it. Since then several clubs have gotten better deals. Juventus is getting around 15mil a year when they have a much smaller marketing base. There are rumors that O2 (arsenals current sponser) or Sony will give Utd close to 18mil a year for the spot on their shirt.

Sinking ship? Doesn't sound like it to me. Sounds like Glazer is trying to pay off some of that debt.
