That's actually a mistake that the Canary Islands were named after canaries. It was the other way around. The word canary is cognate with the Latin word for dog, which is where we get our word canine, I believe the word is canus. The Spaniards found many dogs in these islands and named them the Canary Islands after the dogs, not the birds. Then the birds were found and named after the islands.

BTW, the October Revolution is named as such, because the revolution started in October on the Julian calendar (November on the Gregorian calendar), which Russia used until 1917.
