CANTON, Mass. (AP) — Being Bobby Brown ain't easy these days. A family judge ordered the singer arrested if he steps foot in Massachusetts after Brown failed to show for a hearing Monday over delinquent child support payments.

Brown's attorney said it's a "very difficult time" for Brown, 37, whose tumultuous marriage to Whitney Houston is coming to an end. She filed for a legal separation earlier this month.

"Whether or not he's going through a divorce doesn't negate the fact that he still owes child support relative to his two children that he had prior to his marriage," said Norfolk Probate and Family Court Judge Paula Carey.

Kim Ward, of Stoughton, the mother of two of Brown's children, says Brown owes two months' support, or $11,000.

In June 2004, Brown was sentenced to 90 days in prison for missing three months of payments. That sentence was immediately suspended after Brown made back payments totaling about $15,000.

Brown's attorney, Phaedra Parks, would not say where Brown, a Boston native, is currently living.

"It's just a very difficult time for him, as you can well imagine," said Parks, an Atlanta-based entertainment lawyer. "The media is very aware of this very public divorce that's going on right now. It's unfortunate we find ourselves back in Boston on this matter."

Does Bobby even have any money to pay his child support? Now the he's divorcing Whitney, who's gonna pay it. I think they'll be back together in no time.

he'll hook up w/ another lady in show biz and ruin her life too while she pays for his kids all over america

LOS ANGELES -- After a tumultuous 14-year marriage marked by drug arrests and stints in rehab, Whitney Houston is divorcing Bobby Brown.

The pop singer filed divorce papers in Orange County Superior Court this week, a month after filing for legal separation from Brown, Houston's publicist Nancy Seltzer said Tuesday.

The documents could not be obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press and Brown's attorney Phaedra Parks declined to comment.

Houston, 43, had asked in her separation papers that she be granted custody of the couple's 13-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina, and that Brown, 37, be allowed visitation rights.

The couple wed in 1992, with Houston at the height of her fame as a Grammy-winning superstar known for such hits as "I Will Always Love You."

Brown won acclaim for his gritty R&B songs as a one-time member of the boy band New Edition.

During their marriage, Brown was arrested for drugs and alcohol and Houston entered drug rehabilitation programs twice.

In an attempt to clean up her public image, Houston stepped out last month for an event in Beverly Hills with cousin Dionne Warwick and mogul Clive Davis, with whom she is working on a new album.

Brown, who also has two teenage children with a Massachusetts woman, recently paid up to $11,000 in delinquent child support after being threatened with arrest two weeks ago if he stepped back into the state.

Brown's attorney has said he was having a "very difficult" time due to the separation initiated by Houston.

In her first high-profile public appearance since her recent split from husband Bobby Brown, Whitney Houston was the belle of the ball Saturday night at a stellar benefit in Beverly Hills that raised more than $70 million for juvenile diabetes research.

"I feel great," said Houston, basking in the attention.

The singer, 43, was escorted to the 17th Carousel of Hope Ball by one of the evening's honorees, her record producer Clive Davis, who told USA Today of the woman at his side: "She's been through emotional trauma, and everybody's rooting for her."

Davis also told PEOPLE: "We're going to make a killer album."

Fellow music producer (and the event's other honoree) Quincy Jones, who has known Houston since she was 16, said Houston seems to have turned a corner, telling USA Today, "She's looking at the light, instead of darkness."

Houston sat at the main table with Halle Berry – who herself is a diabetic – and the actress's boyfriend Gabriel Aubry. Elsewhere at the gala, which was hosted by Jay Leno, were Brooke Shields, Teri Hatcher, Hilary Duff, Kristin Davis, Sharon Stone, Minnie Driver, Sidney Poitier and couple Warren Beatty and Annette Bening.

Houston did not sing at the event, but her attendance prompted the evening's entertainer Katharine McPhee to drop her signature number, "Over the Rainbow," in favor of Houston's "I Have Nothing." Houston acknowledged the tribute by nodding at this season's American Idol runner-up during the performance, the newspaper reports.

"It's her first big appearance since the breakup," McPhee, 22, said on the arrivals carpet about Houston. "I would love to sing with her, but unfortunately all eyes are on me."
