That's crazy...I guess most of our colleges require passing a certain number of years of a foreign language, English, social studies, and math to get in too though.

Over here all colleges have the same entry requirements pretty much because you don't apply directly to colleges, it's all electronic

In February everyone in the country who wants to go to college applies for 10 courses in order of preference. In June every one sits 7 to 8 exams. Their grades are converted into points, A = 100, D-=40 and that only depends on the level you take them at higher or ordinary. Higher is the 100 for A, 40 for D- and Ordinary is 60 for A, 5 for D-

Then the points for everyone's top 6 subjects are added up, anyone who failed any of the required subjects are excluded and then the computer assigns places based on order of preference. Each course then comes out with minimum number of points needed to get into it, based on places available and the number of points people who apply for it have. Then the course with the highest points requirement is assigned places and anyone who doesn't get in is moved to their second(third, fourth etc.) preference and that process is repeated for all courses

Some courses have extra requirements as well for example my course required a C in Higher Maths to be considered as opposed to a D in lower as the minimum

 It seems so formulaic and calculated...

but at least you can't argue with a college's decision, really, where here, admissions decisions are pretty interpretative.

Yeah I think they done it so there was no bias in selection. Well you could always argue for bias in exams but in the end everyone in the country is pretty much on a level playing field. It's basically just a supply and demand system for college applications.

The only difference is paying colleges which aren't state owned, it's the same entrance system but due to the fee it's a lot easier to get in. We're probably the one country in the world were private colleges are seen as the place where the less talented people go than public colleges

 It depends on the private college here, I mean somewhere like Harvard or Yale have high reputations, but there's plenty of private colleges that will take almost anyone, as long as you pay the (much) higher tuition fees.

Yeah I can imagine some of them would be pretty crappy

There's only one private (I think it's private) college I can think of here that has a high reputation, and that's the Royal College of Surgeons. Then again how could a college with that name have a bad reputation?

 True...and if it did have a poor reputation, I think I'd have to ask some serious questions about your country's surgeon training program.

Well seeing as despite the fact that they are private they have an entry requirement of 570 points (max possible is 600), they seem to be a pretty well regarded college

I have to choose what subject I'm focusing my degree on in the next few weeks. I think I'm gonna go with Accounting my other choices are...Banking and Finance :)lol: Who in their right mind would do that NOW?), Management (No), HRM (HAHHAHAHA), MIS/Computer Systems (I signed up for a business course?), and one other choice. That has to be the easiest choice ever

 Do you guys have to declare your major/degree program by the end of the second year?

 Yeah, I'm definitely feeling bad for all of the finance majors at my school right now...good thing they're mostly a bunch of bros who miraculously ended up in the business school, and they'll probably not end up with a job anyway.

Well the course I'm doing is a 3 year course, the first two are a general oversight of business courses with a specialising in the last year. In the end it's pretty useless without a masters, seeing as everyone and there mother has a degree now.

Accountancy is the best path I think, even bankrupt companies need accountants to tell them how bankrupt they are

:hi5: Yay for useless undergraduate degrees! It's cool, I'm in the same boat.

 Very true! Accounting seems like it'd be the best option for you.

I think I'm gonna look back on this course with the opinion "It seemed like a good idea at the time". I thought I was going into a course that had a guaranteed job at the end of it now it's useless, I should of just done an arts course

 Maybe...there's really no way to ever know, I guess. That's one of the big reasons why I just said 'fuck it' and went with something that I love, even if it doesn't guarantee me a job...at least I was happy for a few years while doing it, right?

 Morning Justin, how are you? :D

I'm good...I found out that The Flaming Lips are playing the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago in July, but I can't go because we're not allowed to have any time off in July for work this summer. :scream: The three day festival's only $75, and the rest of the lineup is amazing too!

Hey Justin

Guys is there any other forum on the internet as negative as this one? I mean it's crazy here "What's wrong with NLOTH", and people talking about how the album will suck after the hype is over, can't people just enjoy music?

 Hi John.

I think it is healthy to be critical but ETYKIW goes overboard.

What I don't get is that the album has been out for a month and people think the hype will wear off I don't get people around here. It's like they don't have other music to listen to, seriously I don't spend a month decided if an album is good or not, I don't listen to an album I don't like 100 times to make myself like it, I don't listen to an album a million times in a day until I'm sick of it. The idea of doing that stuff just confuses me

I keep telling you guys to stay out of the EYKIW area...:tsk:  Seriously though, that's my way of not becoming annoyed with this forum...I think I would've left a long time ago if I were in there all the time reading the ridiculousness that comes out of people's keyboards.

 That's ridiculous! You can't have just a few days off?! :tsk:

Nope...we have like 6,000 kids here that month for a worldwide youth soccer tournament, so I know why we can't, but really? It's the Flaming Lips!! And, I haven't seen them in over a year... I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll do some shows in between their festival dates this summer, and maybe Minneapolis will pop up. The National is doing the same thing; they're playing Pitchfork, but playing Minneapolis and Milwaukee the two nights prior.

:hmm: Maybe I could convince someone to take my shift for a night though...if I were scheduled then. If I only went for the one day, it wouldn't be as bad as trying to get three days off, I don't think. I have some thinking to do now.

Hype usually goes away after a week or two. If they mean it won't age well, that's so far down the road that it is pointless to even think about.

I know EYKIW is crazy, those people need to learn about non-U2 music that can sometimes be good too

I don't think these people can enjoy an album, I mean would they have said the same thing about AB? TJT? TUF? NLOTH is one of my favourite U2 albums, will it always be, who knows? But right now it is and that's all that matters

I tend to think they would. It is natural to like or dislike albums but you kind of need the former to spend time on a fansite.
