Favorite guitarists:

1. The Edge
2. Jimmy Page
3. Adam Jones
4. Tom Morello
5. Eric Clapton
6. George Harrison
7. Lindsey Buckingham
8. Mark Knopfler
9. Johnny Marr
10. B.B. King

It's always nice to see nods for Robert Smith and James Dean Bradfield. I'd drop Chet Atkins and Joe Pass onto a "best" list along with a lot of the other names already mentioned. I'm not a big country or jazz fan but they're gods in those realms.

My fave guitarists are:

The Edge
Geordie "I've got chords to play" Walker (Killing Joke)
Andreas Bruhn (german guitarist, ex The Sisters of Mercy)
Dave Gilmour
Peter Buck

I'm not a big fan of guitar solos. They can be like jazz, great fun to play but boring to listen to IMO. That's why I was so disappointed with the last Pink Floyd album, most of the songs ran out of imagination and into DG's rent-a-solo. But on every PF album before he plays brilliantly - melodically and emotionally.

My favorites:

1. Edge
2. Eric Clapton
3. David Gilmour
4. Peter Buck
6. Keith Richards
7. Jimmy Page
8. B.B. King
9. Jimi Hendrix
10. Carlos Santana

I can't do the best /favourite thing.....so I'lljust rattle off some that have delighted me over the years, there's far more than 10.

Stevie Ray Vaughn....ahhhhhh, what a deft touch, magic
Jimi Hendrix
Edge
Nuno Bettencourt
Brian May
Gary Moore
Tommy Emmanual
Jose Feliciano
John Williams
Slava Grigoryan
Zakk Wylde and Dimebag on occasion
woops more than 10 already
and some local guitarist you guys will never know or hear
but I have the privilege and pleasure of calling friend
Johnny Pepp, Jode, Prez, Mr Crudley, unknown virtuoso's all:)

ahhhhhhhh the guitar

All of my favorites have been mentioned, but even though I'll probably get flak for this....someone's gotta mention Prince.

How can anyone say that Keith Richards is one of the best guitarists of all time??? The guy plays rhythm guitar 95% of the time and tries to pass it off as lead. And the rhythm guitar that he plays isn't even all that fantastic, IMO. He's not that great folks, and definitely doesn't deserve to be up there with SRV and Gilmour and Townshend.

How could I possibly have forgotten to mention?

WILLIE NELSON
I heard him play/sing Townes Van Zandt's "marie" on the radio last night. Willie's unique style, his timing, has ALWAYS impressed me.
And one of the original "good davids", DAVID GILMOUR.
and Carlos and God(EC) and Rory:(
what everybody else said +some

Robin Guthrie
David Gilmour
John Squire
Matt Bellamy
Nick McCabe
Johnny Greenwood
The Edge
Johnny Marr
Nick Drake
Jeff Buckley

best rock geetarists:

Bernard Butler
Mick Ronson
SRV
The Edge
Jimmy Page
Jimi Hendrix
Billy Corgan
Nick McCabe
Angus Young
Randy Rhodes

Keith Richards might not be the most brilliant guitarist, but his sound and style are without a doubt his own, and much imitated... even today he's just plain cool

Conversely, someone like like Eddie Van Halen, who is/was a fantastic guiatrist, has a sound that now seems horrendously dated.

of course, this is just my opinion... worth no more than your own.
