This is awful.

People piss me off.

From the NY Times:
Body of Boy Found in Bin Inside Home
By ROBERT D. McFADDEN and THOMAS J. LUECK

he body of a 7-year-old boy who had apparently been dead for weeks was discovered yesterday in a storage bin in a house in Newark where his two emaciated young brothers had been found in a locked basement on Saturday, law enforcement officials in New Jersey said last night.

Edward Gordon, director of homicide investigations for the Essex County prosecutor's office, identified the dead child as Faheem Williams, and said his twin brother, Raheem, and a 4-year-old sibling, Tyrone, were being treated at University Hospital in Newark for starvation and dehydration.

While much about the case was unclear last night, Mr. Gordon said the authorities were searching for the children's mother in New York City, where she was believed to have been hit by a car and hospitalized several months ago. Her identity was not disclosed.

Mr. Gordon said the authorities were also searching for Sherry Murphy. The children had been left in her care by the mother, according to the prosecutor.

Pending a news conference today, Detective Todd McClendon, a spokesman for the Newark police, would say only that no one had been arrested and that a number of people were being questioned and sought for information about the weekend discoveries at 188 Parker Street in Branch Brook Park, a working-class neighborhood in north Newark.

As the police cordoned off the area around the two-story, three-family house, neighborhood residents and acquaintances of the children expressed suspicions of a horrendous case of abuse.

One acquaintance said the surviving children were extremely malnourished and appeared to have burn marks on their bodies. But investigators made no accusations.

Mr. Gordon, providing some details in a telephone interview last night, said that Ms. Murphy's boyfriend, Shawn Slappy, 31, acknowledged that he had been living in her apartment at the house for about two weeks, but quoted him as saying he knew nothing about the children.

Dawn Davis, who identified herself as Mr. Slappy's sister, said that he was a security guard at East Orange General Hospital and that he had met Ms. Murphy last fall. She described Ms. Murphy as a topless dancer.

On Saturday, Mr. Slappy told the authorities, Ms. Murphy was not around and he decided to go to the basement to look for a pair of work boots that he suspected Ms. Murphy had hidden from him.

Mr. Slappy said he had found the basement door locked and had used a screwdriver to pry it open, Ms. Davis said. As the door swung open, Ms. Davis said, Mr. Slappy was stunned to see two small faces approaching him in the dim light. "The only thing you could see was their heads coming toward him," she said.

Frightened at the sight, he shut the door, ran upstairs and called the police, Ms. Davis said. She said the brothers had what looked like burn marks all over them and appeared to be starving. "You could count every bone on their bodies," she said.

The police took Raheem and Tyrone to the hospital, where they were listed in fair condition, but they did not find Faheem until yesterday. Mr. Gordon said Raheem had told investigators at the hospital that his twin brother had been missing for weeks.

That apparently prompted the police to return to Parker Street, where they found Faheem's body in a plastic bin in another basement room. Ms. Davis said she understood the body had been hidden in a sleeping bag. The cause of death was unclear last night, pending an autopsy.

The case stunned the neighborhood. "I was shocked," said Miguel Hernandez, 17, who has lived on the block for three years. "It's crazy."

He said he had seen the Williams children playing outside, but not recently.

"They seemed happy," he said. "Nothing really strange about them." But they seemed thin, he added.

That is so wrong. I think that the only thing that comforts me about this is my own personal belief that when the indiviual(s) responsible die, they will be judged for this heinous act or Karma will catch up with them.

I'm always so amazed that humans are capable of such horrendous acts to children. So sad.

Search widens after starving boys found in basement
One child died; homicide charges possible

Tuesday, January 7, 2003 Posted: 2:39 PM EST (1939 GMT)

NEWARK, New Jersey (CNN) -- Police and the FBI were searching Tuesday from Maine to the Carolinas for a woman accused of abandoning three young brothers, one of whom was found dead and two others locked in squalid basement rooms.

Newark, New Jersey, police found the body of 7-year-old Faheem Williams in a plastic container in a locked room over the weekend, Newark Mayor Sharpe James said. Faheem's twin brother, Raheem, and 5-year-old brother, Tyrone, were in another locked room.

The mayor said Tyrone had suffered burns from his neck down that affected his ability to walk.

James said Tuesday an autopsy showed Faheem had suffered from starvation and blunt force trauma. The child was wrapped in a blanket. The other boys were being treated at The University Hospital in Newark, being treated for dehydration and starvation. The mayor said they were in "good spirits."

Police issued an arrest warrant for Sherry Murphy, who was supposed to be looking after the boys while her cousin, the boys' mother, was in jail. Police Lt. Derek Glenn said that Murphy was seen Monday in Newark, but disappeared before police could get there.

In case she fled the state, police have alerted authorities from Maine to the Carolinas, where she may have relatives. The FBI was helping, and a number of leads had been generated by media coverage, Glenn said.

"With the public's continued cooperation, we hope to expedite her apprehension," Glenn said.

Murphy faces child endangerment charges, the Essex County prosecutor's office said Monday. James has said authorities are considering homicide charges.

Officials do not know how long the boys were in the basement. Murphy moved into the apartment the first week of December.

The boy's mother, Melinda Williams, 41, was being treated at a New York hospital for injuries from a car accident she was involved in over the weekend as she drove to see her children, James said.

Williams turned the boys over to Murphy last March, when Williams was jailed on an assault charge. When she was released in August, she was unable to find either Murphy or her children, the mayor said.

She finally learned their whereabouts from an aunt, and had been en route to see them when the car accident happened, James said. He said it is possible she may never walk again.

In another twist, the Division of Youth and Family Services was supposed to be monitoring the boys when their mother went to jail, but did not, James said. He said officials were looking into why that happened.

Boyfriend discovered boys in 'terrible state'

Police were called Saturday by Shawn Slappy, who said he had been dating Murphy and had gone down to the basement to find shoes and boots. He found two children in a room "in a terrible state," James said.

When Raheem told authorities he had a twin brother, police returned to the house and discovered a child's body in another room.

Officials do not know how long the boys were in the basement. Murphy moved into the apartment the first week of December, and neighbors said they did not recall ever seeing the children.

"Raheem couldn't talk about any school he's been attending," James said. "It could be a case where the children were moved from one locked condition to another. ... There's a real mystery unfolding here."

Both boys were enjoying food and freedom to play, he said, noting that Tyrone was eating jelly from a jar.

"[They are] two kids with good manners, good spirit, suffering for no reason of their own," he said. "They're reaching out for love and caring."
