I just gave myself a grand idea to start a thread for us teachers since I know there are about 5-6 of us (at least).


This is for any stories you have positive or negative........big or small.

As teachers we get a lot of highs and lows and its good to discuss them. I have plenty to share, but I want to organize my thoughts first. I just wanted to start this thread is all so I don't forget (absent minded professor).

So where, what and why do you teach?

today was 'mix it up' day (yeah I know) so we all had to sit with someone dif. so me and my friends went to the teach. lounge to eat...

One of the better moments in my day i might add..

I know this is for teachers, but you just reminded me of sometime in my last month of my senior year. I snuck into the teacher's lounge to get something I printed (my band teacher to send it there, and then he disappeared so I had to go get it myself) and I was so freaked about getting caught, but afterward I was like, "OMG....it took me 13 years, but I have finally been in the teacher's lounge." and I had a good laugh over it

Well, I'm not a teacher per se, but I am an advisor at a university, I make sure my students don't have a nervous breakdown.

I'll be a teacher in 2 years. At least, I'm going to back to school to be one. So, I hope I will be a teacher in 2 years...so if you could start this up again in two years, or keep it going for that long, I'd appreciate it.

My wife is an art teacher in a grammer school. She loves it. She's certified K-12, but for now is teaching K-5. You want to teach college art? Awesome.

I think I would really like that kind of job. What kind of background do you need for it?

I teach English as a Second Language in the Boston area. I've taught for about 10 years both in the US and abroad. I'm kind of getting burnt out and would like to change to something new but related to working with students. I'm doing my MA at the moment and just working part time now.

I'm getting (in less than 6 months now ) my MAEd in Higher Education and Student affairs. I didn't really have much of a background...I got a BA in Political Science and volunteered for a year, and did a week of work in a Career Center. I don't think it was my background as much as my interests that got me into the program. I'm big on volunteering, and help students develop into leaders.

In HESA, we very much believe in the holistic approach to learning, so we all work in co-curricular fields to ensure students can have all the resources necessary to help them grow, learn and prepare them for life beyond college.

well i technicaly work in a school (in an office, not as a teacher) and coach basketball at said school, i am not a certified teacher as of yet... but we're going back to school in the fall to take care of that little technicality

I was considering applying to teachers college for next year... but I'm thinking I'll take a Teaching ESL course elsewhere, spend time doing some personal things first, and maybe apply to teacher's college in a few years.

I've been tutoring a highschool French class, and its something I want to do, but teaching really seems to absorb the entirety of teachers' lives. I'm not ready to commit to that sort of involvement yet. My emotional state is stretched about as thin as it can go without me snapping (my dad's stroke in september at age 45, my employer over-working me, my grandmother's hospitalization, and the pending results that will determine whether or not one of my younger brothers has liver cancer) -- really, I don't have the personal resources to make the investment into other people that teachers need to do in order to teach well.

So anyway... I may join you shortly, but not yet.

Before I moved to the US, I teached a 4th/5th grade class at a special ed school.

When I came here, I set up an after school language program for elementary children. Now there's also a program for middle & high school students.
I teach my native language and about my country's culture, history, geography, etc.

I'm a professor at a post-secondary institution. I usually teach academic writing to second language college students, but I'm on release time at the moment doing research (which today I spent way too much time avoiding!). I also coordinate my school's language program for newcomers (a settlement language program). That can be really rewarding, as language proficiency is such an important tool for people struggling to get settled in their new country. I've most recently done a lot of work with internationally educated nurses. That's been great.

I'm working on using language descriptors to determine/describe the proficiency needed for success in taking certain standardized tests. Does that make sense?

I had a student last year who was on the no pass list and if he had to use the bathroom he had to have an escort. Why, you might ask??

Let's see here: not only was he caught on one occasion drinking in the bathroom but on a separate occasion he was caught receiving a certain oral "service" from a female student.
