Now we arrive in what's left of Strathewen, Victoria. It is situated 63 kilometres from central Melbourne near Kinglake National Park, and is one of the towns razed by the massive bushfires on Black Saturday. As much as 15% of its population may be dead. Other towns such as Kinglake, Marysville, and Narbethong have suffered as horribly. At the moment, the death toll from the bushfires sits at 171 and will likely rise further. Here's a special Superthread. RIP.

There are still multiple fires out of control, including some in the Yarra Valley near Strathewen. On a personal note, the Yarra Valley Railway has copped it. Its heritage trains and presently operable track in Healesville are unscathed, but the line that was being restored to Yarra Glen and Lilydale is a wreck. The historic Yarra Glen station was only just saved. The wooden trestle bridges along the line were less lucky.

I don't know how a volunteer heritage society is meant to recover from that. But I think I'll start chipping in regularly.

my phone back in new zealand is on prepay, and i really don't use it enough to justify much more than that.
