It'll take me a while to do this... I have to agree with you about the quality of the lyrics in "Living Proof"... but I really dislike the music on that whole album. I've heard some local folk artists cover "If I Should Fall Behind" acoustically, and it's amazing...

The River is a great album lyrically. He tells a lot of stories in his songs. He, next to about ten others, is about as good as it gets.

Honestly.....
"It's like someone took a knife baby, edgy and dull, and cut a six-valley through the middle of my skull" from I'M ON FIRE. It's pretty graphic but describes the feeling so well. BTW, his voice in that song sounds like a train whistle....kinda like Bono's on parts of The Joshua Tree. (Awesome!) |

BADLANDS:
Workin' in the fields till you get your back burned Workin' neath the wheel till you get your facts learned Baby I got my facts, learned real good right now You better get it straight darling Poor man wanna be rich, rich man wanna be king And a king ain't satisfied till he rules everything I wanna go out tonight, I wanna find out what I got MURDER INC. So you keep a little secret down deep inside your dresser drawer From dealing with the heat you're feelin' down on the killin' floor No matter where you step you feel you're never out of danger So the comfort that you keep's a gold-plated snub-nose thirty-two I heard that you, you got a jodb downtown Man it leaves your head cold And everywhere you look life ain't got no soul That apartment you live in feels like it's just a place to hide When your walkin' down the streets you won't meet no one eye to eye Now the cops reported you as just another homicide I can tell that you was just frustrated From livin' with Murder Incorporated BETTER DAYS: Well I took a piss at fortune's sweet kiss It's like eatin' caviar and dirt It's a sad funny ending to find yourself pretending A rich man in a poor man's shirt Now my ass was draggin' when from a passin' gypsy wagon Your heart like a diamond shone Tonight I'm layin' in your arms carvin' lucky charms Out of these heard luck bones LONESOME DAY: Better ask questions before you shoot Deceit and betrayal's bitter fruit It's hard to swallow, come time to pay That taste on your tongue don't easily slip away THUNDER ROAD: Well now I'm no hero That's understood All the redemption I can offer, girl Is beneath this dirty hood With a chance to make it good somehow Hey what else can we do now Except roll down the window And let the wind blow back your hair Well the night's busting open These two lanes will take us anywhere We got one last chance to make it real To trade in these wings on some wheels Climb in back Heaven's waiting on down the tracks The boss rules. ![]() |

I did a sociological paper on the song DOTEOT once. The teacher gave us an assignent to analyze a song of our choice sociologically. I was torn between the Boss and U2. I picked Darkness, my friend picked Metallica's ...And Justice for All. Everyone else in the class picked Black Eyed Peas "Where is the Love"

Well Jesus kissed his mother's hands
Whispered "Mother, still your tears, For remember the soul of the universe Willed a world and it appeared" This whole song is powerful ("Jesus Was an Only Son") |

![]() I think most of his lyrics are great, but I like this bit from Human Touch: "Oh girl that feeling of safety you prize Well it comes at a hard hard price You can't shut off the risk and the pain Without losin' the love that remains We're all riders on this train" |

The Rangers had a homecoming
In Harlem late last night And the Magic Rat drove his sleek machine Over the Jersey state line Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain The Rat pulls into town rolls up his pants Together they take a stab at romance And disappear down Flamingo Lane Well the Maximum Lawmen run down Flamingo Chasing the Rat and the barefoot girl And the kids round here look just like shadows Always quiet, holding hands From the churches to the jails Tonight all is silence in the world As we take our stand Down in Jungleland |

I don't know all of Bruce's lyrics very well, but this a song that I've always loved. Not only are the words beautiful but musically it's pretty powerful as well. Tunnel of Love may be his most personal record so it's not surprising.
