Shuttlecock II: This is Where We Can Reach Around

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
It's OK, but it's ten years old and I would rather not have it trotted back out and stuck on a new album. I would much rather have a new track.

There is an extremely high chance that the new track would be worse though.

I still listen to all U2 albums, except Bomb and, once the honeymoon phase is over, Songs of Innocence.

The upcoming tour would be the perfect occasion for them to break out A Sort of Homecoming again, wouldn't it? Fits thematically.

I actually wonder what kind of older songs/album will draw their attention this time around. Boy would be the obvious answer, but they've done that in the Vertigo tour.

Hoping for War material this time around. Two Hearts, Like A Song, Surrender. Any or all of those would be amazing.

Maybe we'll get a five song set of tunes about Bono's mom:
I Will Follow
Tomorrow
Lemon
Mofo
Iris
That new song that's going to be a bonus track

(I feel like there's a sixth song that I'm overlooking...)

Out of Control came to mind, but now I don't remember if it's actually about his mother.

I count six tracks there.

Anal Porn, Yeah! (There Is No Anal Love)

Cam-cam-camera
Start the camera
Cam-cam-camera
Start the camera

Anal porn, yeah!
And then we sell it for a tiny fee
The sex that turns your tip brown
Well, that's all the sex I want to see

Bitches fear butthole tumors
The actor's smile a bit rapey

Anal porn, yeah!
And a child she thought would never come
But it did
And she named it...Lance

Whoa ooh whoa ooh whoa!
All I know
And all I need to know is
Where is the...
Yeah where is the anal plug?

I didn't pay her
She stripped her clothes off anyway
Of all the stars in our town
Lance's Mom is the ugliest of all I'd say
In her bedroom, even the mirror
Can't help but cry like a baby

Anal porn, yeah!!!
Blood orange cum drips down beneath her feet
I've seen for myself, this woman's a beast
That's how I know

Whoa ooh whoa ooh whoa!
That's how I know
And why I need to know
That there is no...
Yeah there is no anal love

All I know
And all I need to know
Is there is no
Yeah there is no anal love

They'll open and close with In a Little While.

While I'm not a big fan of that song, it's better than being forced to listen to Elevation for yet another tour. I'm usually the last to complain about the band but you'll never get me to stfu about that fucking song or Stuck. I know ATYCLB means a lot to a lot of people and was an entry point for a lot of younger fans but, man, I just don't really like it all that much.

getting some badminton back into this bitch:

THE DOUBLES

Somebody stepped onto the court
Somebody stepped onto the court
Little by little they ruined the sport
'til singles are your last resort

You think it's easier
To hit a winner during doubles
When your partner is new
And you think it's easier
To get some topspin
Well it's the hardest play you'll ever do

I have a tightly-strung racquet
So I can hit cocks and hit cocks some more
I see the tournament bracket
But I'm not playing doubles anymore

Somebody stepped onto the court
Somebody stepped onto the court
Little by little they ruined the sport
'til singles are your last resort

You think it's easier
To give up on your partner
If your partner is losing sets
You think it's easier
But before you served the bird
I had charged my way up to the net

I have a tightly-strung racquet
So I can hit cocks and hit cocks some more
I see the tournament bracket
But I'm not playing doubles anymore

Somebody stepped onto the court
Somebody stepped onto the court
Little by little they ruined the sport
'til singles are your last resort

God knows it's not easy
Riding on the back of someone else's game
Thank god there's no Donaghy
I'm solo and I'm not afraid
Got PEDs and I'm not ashamed

Somebody stepped onto the court
Somebody stepped onto the court
Little by little they ruined the sport
'til singles are your last resort

VOLLEYCANO

The serve is spinning fast tonight
You can hurt yourself tryin' to return
To where they shot it from
I'm so glad that the 'cock is all gone

Been up at the net
Been back at the line
Been from side to side
Do you play at home or just on vacation?

Oh, volleycano
You don't wanna, you don't wanna slow
Volleycano
The wind here had better not blow
Volleycano
You don't wanna, you don't wanna slow

Crab colors on your bare thighs
Sunburn has made a mess of you
Now you don't tan so well
This aloe's gonna be all used

Been up at the net
Been back at the line
Been from side to side
Do you play at home or just on vacation?

Oh, volleycano
You don't wanna, you don't wanna slow
Volleycano
The wind here had better not blow
Volleycano
You don't wanna, you don't wanna slow
You're on a court of clay, playin' a volleycano

You were alone
Now you're not alone
You were alone
But now
We are back-and-forth
You and I are back-and-forth
We are back-and-forth
You and I are back-and-forth

Oh, volleycano
You don't wanna, you don't wanna slow
Volleycano
The wind here had better not blow
Volleycano
You don't wanna, you don't wanna slow
You're on a court of clay, playin' a volleycano

A little bit of a follow up on that from the New Yorker today:

U2’s best songs were written during these years—roughly from 1986, when they began recording “The Joshua Tree,” to 1997, the year “Pop” (which is actually very good) was released. But there was a problem: the songs depended for their power on the dramatization of Bono’s ambivalence about God.

....

U2 have continued to write songs of doubt (“Wake Up Dead Man,” off “Pop,” is especially good). But they are no longer wild, ludic, and unhinged in the way they talk about God. There used to be something improvisational and risky about their spirituality—it seemed as though it might go off the rails, veering into anger or despair. Now, for the most part, they focus on a positive message, expressed directly and without ambiguity. The band’s live shows have a liturgical feel: Bono, who regularly interpolates hymns and bits of Scripture into his live performances, leads the congregation with confidence.

First off, between the AV Club and The New Yorker, it's basically fully mainstream to resuscitate Pop's reptuation, so, congratulations team. We did it. It's now cutting edge to dislike Pop.

....This article has its own points to consider. I don't like how authoritatively the author lands on specific song interpretations, but overall I think it rings true to me. For people posting here there's nothing too revelatory about the band's relationship to Christianity, but again: he's writing for a mainstream audience.

^that. I couldn't give a fuck about how great blessed souls are. But the songs where they're grappling with religion are generally awesome, and really interesting to me, even as an #atheist.

Bravo, sir.

jesus, I'd never heard that. if they put in some effort it could be fucking amazing, and a true highlight. definitely in the top handful of songs I'd like to see revived.

as it stands, that's pretty much an affront to the original.

If that's the one with the fan(as opposed to the one at the first Slane gig, there were two shots at it on the Elevation tour), it was spur-of-the-moment at the fan's request, totally unrehearsed. I'm sure if they actually rehearsed it and tried to make it great, it would be great.

People were posting setlists at the end of the first thread. My post-new-album pre-tour setlist predictions have never been particularly close to what the setlist ended up being, so instead of a prediction, I'm just going to post something I'd like to see. Yes, I know it's long. / = rotate.
