What do you all think are the greatest instrumentals in rock history? I'll define instrumental as at least a one minute section of it's host song.

Off the top of my head, I'll go with "Light My Fire" by the Doors. That instrumental section has got to be the best piece of organ/keyboard playing in rock history. The bass line is real tight during that section, also. Plus, I like the Doors alot better when Jim Morrison is held in check. He doesn't dominate this song at all.

Can't remember how long it lasts but what about Free Bird by Lyncan'trememberhowtospellitSkywhatever?

People will probably laugh at this, but I love Eric Clapton's guitar solo in the beginning of 'I Wish it Would Rain Down' by Phil Collins.

A good percentage of the entire Lateralus record by Tool.

Agreed with the Tool mention. There's a good chance my choices might exceed the one minute stipulation...

Tea For One- Led Zeppelin
In My Time of Dying- Led Zeppelin
Staralfur- Sigur Ros and Njosnavelin- Sigur Ros (I'll cheat by saying that the vocals are essentially an instrument)
Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore- The Mars Volta
The Walls Get Smaller- The Music
The Sea Is In Here- The Mercury Program
Nancy And The Girdle Boy- KC Accidental
Greet Death- Explosions in the Sky
Pitter Patter Goes My Heart- Broken Social Scene
I Slept With Bonhomme at the CBC- Broken Social Scene

And anything by Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

I'm kind of into instrumentals at the moment.

i slept with bonhomme at the cbc haha...oh i love that title. good song too, but man they come up with weird names.

next thing you know, broken social scene will call a song of theirs "hand7obs for the holidays"... :sexywink:

My one minute stipulation was meant as a minimum, not a maximum. So by all means, bring on the long instrumental sections. Just make sure they're great---lol.

At the moment for myself:

Most anything by Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Slint, and Wilderness.

The coda to U2's All I Want Is You
The ending of Elvis Costello & The Attractions' Town Cryer

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - 1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)/Moon, Turn The Clouds... gently gently away

Average White Band - Pick up the Pieces
Average White Band - McEwan's Export
David Bowie - Speed of Life
