His career is dead.

And Samuel L. Jackson killed him.

Ok, hear me out. There was once a time when robert De Niro would do nothing but spectacular work. There was a reason he was considered the best alive. Personally I'd say this stint was from 1973-1984, from Mean Streets to Once Upon A Time In America.

After that he had a good run of solid roles, and a career ranging from downright awful (Cop Land, Frankenstein) to the mediocre (Backdraft, Cape Fear) to the legendary (Goodfella's, Casino), and everywhere in between. He was still the fucking man, but he was becoming dangerously inconsistent.

Than a bizarre thing happened. He appeared in Jackie Brown. His role as Luis Gara was a peculiar spot for De Niro. He was played a washed-up, no good, worthless shell of the characters he built his career on in the 70's and 80's. And he was wonderful. Tarantino's casting of De Niro in this flick was brutally ironic and beautiful. It's one of my favorite De Niro roles to date. The unfortunate Luis met his maker at the business end of Samuel L. Jackson's 9mm after making a remarkable series of fuck-ups, including a spectacular scene where he kills a bitching Bridget Fonda in the parking lot outside of a shopping center.

But I digress. What I find particularly humorous about this, is that after this ironic role in Jackie Brown, De Niro's career went to shit. All of a sudden he started playing crap roles, appearing in lame mainstream comedies, and accomplishing approxiimately buttkiss as far as quality cinema. Sure, he's had a few decent roles since J.B. (Great Expectations and Ronin were OK for him, but everything else he's done is a damn near-embarassment given his spectacular career. I don't even want to list all the shit he's done in the past 10 years. It's saddening.

It's like he really was Luis Gara, shot dead in a van, a washed-up loser displaced in time. It's almost poetic, isn't it?

:shame: Whatever your opinion of Copland as a film, I think DeNiro was amazing in his role in that film. Personally, I liked Copland, but aside from that, I thought Bobby D. did a great job with his character.

You also have to take into account that, as an actor gets into his or her 50s and 60s, the film roles available to them become scanter and scanter. That's not to say there are no good roles for older actors, but I think most would agree the pickings are slimmer.

And so what if his best gigs are behind him. Those were some gigs! Gigs most actors would give their right arm to be able to claim as their own.

If he wants to make happy, safe, comfort-food films now in his golden years . . . ehh, so let him . . . who am I to throw stones.

Cop Land or no Cop Land, he still has enough stinkers in the last decade to warrant a "wag of the finger".

When I saw him in Rocky & Bulwinkle, I knew something had gone terribly wrong.

It is true however that he's gone for the $$$ recently, but look at Pacino.

People forget he was in Gigli.

Gigli!

Midnight Run, meh. Cape Fear in interesting, but there isn't anything spectacular about it either. It's intentionaly exargerated in almost all aspects, and De Niro is pulling off another one of his famous self-titled "non-performances", which I sort of equate to him putting on a funny accent or attitude, reading some lines, and calling it a day. Like I said, I enjoy the film, but it's average.

And I almost feel like giving Winnie a cookie for completely ignoring (failing to comprehend/give a shit?) my point once again...

...almost.

His part in "Jackie Brown" is a cameo?

A cameo is Chuck Norris in "Dodgeball," not a main role in a movie like Jackie.

That's like saying Bruce Willis had a cameo in "Pulp Fiction"

" awful " copland ???

Ok, maybe not awful. I haven't seen it in a while. But I'm not watching it again. I remember not liking...anything about it, including Bobby.

jackie brown role which is not a role , but a
cameo ...?.....

No...just, no.

" Legendary " goodfellas "......

Yeah. What?

What the fuck are you winking so much for? You clearly don't know what you're talking about.

he's there , but it's completely forgettable , michael Keaton played better in Jackie Brown , i think deniro just wanted to work with tarantino , esp. after pulp fiction buzz , didn't work out , imo

One of my favorite things about Jackie Brown was De Niro playing an absolute loser. I agree with the Keaton comment, but the real winner of this movie not named Sam Jackson is Robert Forster.

not going to get into the debate, cause I love DeNiro....he could read voice overs in commercials and still be great (oh yeah, he IS doing that!) ..just wanted to voice my agreement with his role in Jackie Brown...loved him in that role! that scene in the mall parking lot was golden!

Maybe he just likes to work. Why should he have to choose his projects based on what he thinks the public will like? I think he's brilliant and as far as i'm concerned he can take any role he wants. Good for him for branching out.

I just read an interview with Christopher Walken where he said he's never turned down a role (which definitely explains why he seems to be in every movie). He's definitely done a lot of awful movies, but if the guy loves acting that much, then let him act. It's his career.

Lance, are you seriously telling me you can't appreciate Meet The Parents and Meet The Fockers? I mean, the sequel was a good notch or two below the original, but the original is a brilliant comedy.

I agree. I think its great that he is the fucking man in dramatic roles, but then can turn it up and BE FUNNY in non serious roles.
Not every movie is a cult classic, and oscar winner, or some obscure shitpiece that everyone says they love because other people do.

I think MTP and MTF are good movies. Funny, awkward, and De Niro does an excellent job.

Im sure in the future he'll do some anthony hopkins stuff and rock it, but for now, i don't think he is anywhere near the level of "sucks"

He just likes his chicken spicy that's all...

I am not a huge De Niro fan but I came to the realization years ago that he does what ever the fuck he wants and if you have a problem with that you can sleep with the fishes capiche?

I have always found him a rather odd actor, I mean he has had a very "eclectic" set of roles throughout his career, does anyone remember his roles in Brazil or We're No Angels or Awakenings or Mad Dog And Glory?

Cop Land is a great little flick (the director's cut, that is).

I agree about De Niro. He's been on auto pilot for over a decade. At least Pacino still takes risks.

De Niro isn't a good comedic actor imo. He's good at playing the straight man, reacting to someone else playing the fool.

Pacino, meanwhile, has appeared in fewer out and out comedies, but he often gives his characters a comedic edge. His sense of timing is incredible.

(Sorry for comparing them, but it was inevitable.)

I agree that Pacino is still a sharp actor. The last few movies he's done haven't been very good, but his rolls up until 2002 were still excellent.
