"letter from an occupant" is still my favorite new pornographers song.

Anyone care to fill me in on what's happened in the Sandusky/Paterno/Penn State scandal this past week? I've been cut off from the outside world.

I'm in the opening stages of going back through about sixty albums from 2011. :crack:

Bon Iver is making a strong push for my top five, though.

Both Paterno and Sandusky were captured by a lynch mob and beheaded by guillotine.

Pretty exciting stuff.

sandusky did an interview with the new york times that confirmed he is truly that creepy. joe pa's wife rambled about the truth needing to come out. i continued to lose respect for my classmates.

I'm usually really down on the southern rock, but Allman Brothers Band has some great songs - Midnight Rider and Whippin' Post foremost among them.

I love southern and blues rock, was raised on Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, etc. Although Neil's voice gets to me after a while.

I heard Sailin' Shoes by Little Feat the other day...that is one hot southern rock album. Maybe not as great as the Allmans' best, but still a nice surprise.

I may or may not have done a stirring rendition of Rainbow Connection at karaoke tonight

I did

it was stirring

Why ARE there so many songs about rainbows?

It's a valid question.

Mylo Xyloto is a vapid, overproduced piece of shit, and I'm becoming more convinced of this as I listen to it, not less. I have no idea how such flashy nothingness could grow on a person. It's like being spoonfed stale, off-brand marshmallow fluff.

Sorry, just didn't want to derail the Coldplay thread with more bitching.

My apologies to those who like it. :)

My incessant bitching about Raconte inspired you, did it?

I think that Major Minus and Princess of China are both great tracks. I could take or leave the rest of the album. That's essentially how I feel about every Coldplay album post-Parachutes: two or three excellent songs surrounded by apathy.

I really don't understand what makes Princess of China worse than any other song on the album. The derision that song got singled out for is, to me, ridiculous. I like Hurts Like Heaven, Major Minus and Don't Let It Break Your Heart and that's it.

Do you ever get the feeling that you're missin' the mark?

A lot of that was a knee-jerk reaction to Rihanna's presence, I think - the same type of negative reaction many had to Jay-Z showing up on whatever U2 track that was (Scarlet?). Ridiculous, but to be expected, I fear. Reading through some random Amazon or YouTube comments demonstrates as much - take my word for it, as I would not want to subject you to reading YouTube comments. Personally, I think that there is a racial issue there, but that's not something to be discussed here, I guess.

I think that Princess works on almost every level: great synth line, infectious hook, insistent beat, effective use of Rihanna's vocals. Definitely the stand-out of the album for me.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeey, traviud.

I can't remember when you suggested the Smith Westerns to me, but thanks for the recommend. It's not what I expected, but it's very good stuff.

Lana Del Rey anyone? :hyper:

Oh, hell yeah. Smarmy young dudes trying to add some swagger to indie rock is something I approve of. I also like that they toe that fine line between hooky and hopelessly ragged.

I'm trying to fix my year end list in the coming weeks. I just know it's going to turn out that I get my new computer the last week of December. Then...insanity!
