Snow? I wish! It was cold, but not THAT cold.
I heard it was meant to slow around Mt Macedon way. Did you get any in Castlemaine?
Nice little throwback to the laidback side of early Verve, huh! Going to need to download it one of these days. Would've been interesting to have it on Urban Hymns, not that I'm sure there's much on there that I'd cut in favour of it (though Neon Wilderness of course is pointless).
You really need Voyager 1, if only for the fucking immense performance of Gravity Grave. Shame about how it was only released on vinyl, copies are really rare, and online rips feature all the characteristic crackles and pops of vinyl that make me so mystified why anybody nowadays fetishises it.
I didn't see any, but then I didn't get up until after 9am.
Apparently all the snow was around Mt Dandenong, Kinglake etc, and a bit near Ballarat. Bits of hail elsewhere, and a markedly reduced crowd for the Caulfield Cup, haha.
I saw on the news that there's a huge rail tunnel being dug under Switzerland, and the two groups tunnelling have met in the middle now?
I'd probably prefer to get it off iTunes sometime in the future. But it's a tune that really sticks in your head. Would be killer with headphones on.
Amazing how goddamn long Urban Hymns is, for all it's greatness it does have a filler track or two that I usually skip, like One Day and Velvet Morning. They never really clicked for me.
I looked up Gravity Grave live on YouTube, only a few performances and one Glastonbury performance where Ashcroft's hair was down past his shoulders, wearing a skivvy (seemed purple) and with jeans that made him look like a girl. Funny.
I wouldn't mind giving Voyager 1 a listen at all.
I wouldn't dare touch Velvet Morning - if you ask me, it's one of the most powerful songs on the album; I'd probably rate it in my top four. I probably wouldn't touch anything from Space And Time onwards; it's such a great run of songs. I'd probably kick off something beforehand ... always forget how Catching The Butterfly goes, which can't be a good sign. And like I said before, Neon Wilderness is pointless and the most obvious example of filler.
They used to jam on Gravity Grave back in the day; apparently sometimes they could really get in a groove and just keep it going for ages. It's bloody fun to play too. I've forgotten now, but I learnt it on the bass a while back and I can see how it got its live rep. If that was my song, I'd be jamming it as much as possible too!
I love Catching the Butterfly, especially when the bridge lets rip into the guitar solo. The guitar part before the solo is absolutely heavenly. Man, I still maintain that if The Verve kept on going they would've been more highly rated than Radiohead across the board. I still hold out hope that they'll reunite once more and put out MOAR stuff. Gag Ashcroft, anything.
Axver, what do you think of A Northern Soul? I'm thinking of getting it soon. I already love This Is Music and judging by the 30-second previews on iTunes it seems like it would be a good get.
I really need some blur, too.
Just checked Catching The Butterfly - it's really the start I don't like. It gets better, but I'd definitely rate it as one of the weakest songs on Urban Hymns.
After the last abortive reunion, I'm not sure I really want another one, especially not if Ashcroft's getting all fundie on us. That said, wish I could see them live, or have seen them live back in the heyday. As far as A Northern Soul goes, I'm not as crazy on it as I feel like I should be. You'll probably dig it more than I do. This Is Music is kind of anomalous, but the album is a good bridge between the style of ASIH and Urban Hymns. I will say that the opener, A New Decade, is one of the finest songs The Verve ever made.
What I know of Blur has not struck me much ... Charlotte reckons I need to give them another go though. Well, maybe when she gets back. So much of music out there.
Still earlier than me!
Ah yes, I remember reading on the BOM's site that Mt Dandenong might be in for a bit of snow. Didn't pay attention to the racing of the lovely lovely lovely lovely lovely horses ...
And yep, it'll be the longest rail tunnel in the world (and over twice the length of the longest road tunnel), but apparently it won't be finished for a good few years yet. Lots more work to go! Will be a huge contribution to European transport networks once it's done though. Again, Europe makes Australian infrastructure look like absolute shit.
Ashcroft is just a bit of a git with his head wedged up his arse a wee way. It's his ego that keeps tearing apart The Verve - he knows full well that Nick McCabe IS The Verve, but he just doesn't want to admit it because he's the frontman. I keep meaning to check out that United Nations Of Sound album just for the horror.
I thought Parklife was the Blur album everybody's supposed to listen to?
Let's see, 1997, huh, it's got a pretty good showing in my RYM ratings. 4 or 4.5 star releases from Bak De Syv Fjell, Bike, Borknagar, Buddha On The Moon, Emperor, In The Woods, Ulver, The Verve, etc. Even Dream Theater get a good rating with their last ever good album!
Well, you had a fairly big night... how was Alpine?
Yeah, they said it's due to open in six years. Europe does have a shitload more money than we do... but yeah. For shame, us.
Yeah, and then there was that album that everybody worshipped ...
you mean the album that i gave 1.5 stars?
OK Computer is terrific.
I quite like OK Computer... besides Electioneering, I very much enjoy Airbag, Exit Music, and The Tourist. Actually, I like pretty much all of it from Electioneering onwards. I think I got over the singles, possibly because Triple J was playing them to death even several years later, when I started listening.
I wrote quite a long reply to a bunch of posts here only for my computer to freeze...anyway I've been busy with a Masters of Accounting, how have you all been?
Moving is a good song, the two b-sides I DO NOT
Ashcroft is a great singer who wrote some amazing lyrics, he also made a lot of shit music as a solo singer
and torrents > blogs
I think that covers it
I really like it but I can understand and respect Axver's harsh criticisms of it.

Hey guys, just stopping by briefly. I'm in New Zealand at the moment, rather unexpectedly - I booked a flight and hopped on it less than 12 hours later. Anyway, my grandma passed away a few days ago so I'm here for the funeral. hardly the circumstances I was expecting to come back to, but what can you do. So I've abandoned Ax at home and taken off!
But I just wanted to let you know I'm alive, really! Hope everyone is ok
That's an awfully big fence you're sitting on, Vlad

How's that Masters of Accounting treat you, or shouldn't I ask?
Moving's OK ... the second b-side sounds like they wanted to be Green Day.
Why would you take torrents over blogs? It's usually easier to find stuff on blogs, it's quicker to download, you don't have the hassles of seeding or having any software ... way of the future, man.
