I'm in the middle of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which I think might replace Dr. Zhivago as my favorite book. There are a ton of references to Parnell, which the book says is a pseudonym to Michael Davitt. Unfortunately, I don't know much about Irish history ( yet), so can someone please explain the significance of Parnell/Davitt in relation to Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man? What was occurring in Ireland at the time of the novel? Thanks!
