from stereogum.com (which also includes for download a rather interesting version of Paul Anka singing 'Black Hole Sun'):

Pirate enthusiast and rejected Real Worlder Dave Eggers persuaded Stereogum's favorite nü-folkies to cover each other's songs for the Believer bard's new compilation CD. Free with the June issue...

01 The Decemberists - "Bridges & Balloons" by Joanna Newsom
02 Spoon - "Decora" by Yo La Tengo
03 Constantines - "Why I Didn't Like August '93" by Elevator
04 CocoRosie - "Ohio" by Damien Jurado
05 The Mountain Goats - "Pet Politics" by Silver Jews
06 San Serac - "Late Blues" by Ida
07 The Shins - "We Will Become Silhouettes" by the Postal Service
08 Josephine Foster - "The Golden Window" by the Cherry Blossoms
09 Cynthia G. Mason - "Surprise, AZ" by Richard Buckner
10 Jim Guthrie - "Nighttime/Anytime (It's Alright)" by the Constantines
11 Espers - "Firefly Refrain" by Fursaxa
12 Two Gallants - "Anna's Sweater" by Blear
13 Vetiver - "Be Kind to Me" by Michael Hurley
14 Ida - "My Fair, My Dark" by David Schickele
15 Mount Eerie - "Waterfalls" by Thanksgiving
16 Devendra Banhart - "Fistful of Love" by Antony & the Johnsons
17 Wolf Parade - "Claxxon's Lament" by Frog Eyes

Sounds like an indie-yuppie's wet dream. (Speaking of which ... contest winner will be announced next week, possibly in a major magazine. Stay tuned.)

call me an indie-yuppie, but that looks pretty damn good.

That's weird...I was just listening to The Believer's last mix last night. This one sounds better. Sometimes Eggers' music taste is about as good as his literary taste which doesn't always live up to his reputation.

07 The Shins - "We Will Become Silhouettes" by the Postal Service

I actually like this version of the song better than the original postal service version.

That Paul Anka is a gem.

Rod Stewart goes out and covers "The Classics", while the Anka makes an album with swinging versions of songs by Nirvana, Oasis, and The Cure. Lovecats!

Amazing. Horrible in many ways, but amazing.

it's slightly disappointing that most of this stuff isn't exactly new.. but it's a really interesting list and an all round good idea.

The Decemberists cover is quite good, as is the Postal Service/Shins one. I havent heard any others, but Spoon looks tasty.
