The extraordinarily bitter divorce battle between Liza Minnelli and David Gest has sunk to a sordid new low, with Gest accusing the Cabaret star of carrying a sexually transmitted disease.

In turn, the 60-year-old singer has claimed that her estranged husband tried to "poison" her.

These latest allegations, documented in papers filed in Manhattan's Supreme Court, come nearly three years after the couple first filed for divorce.

Fifty-three year old Gest is claiming that Miss Minnelli hid herpes simplex, a sexually transmitted infection, from him until after their marriage.

In the public court filing, Gest's lawyer demands to know when and how Minnelli became infected, stating that her medical condition may be used against the Oscar-winning star.

Indeed, if the four-times married singer had herpes before they got married in March 2002, Gest can cite fraud in the case, thus rendering the couple's pre-nuptial agreement null and void.

He admits, however, that he never contracted the disease during their time together.

At present, Gest is suing Miss Minnelli, the daughter of Judy Garland, for £7 million.

"David was devastated when he found [this] out a year after they had been together and six months after they were married," a source close to Gest told the New York Post.

In the same papers, Miss Minnelli asserts that she was "living in fear" during the 14-month marriage, adding that perma-tanned Gest was "trying to poison her with drugs."

The filing does not detail, however, just how Gest is supposed to have drugged Miss Minnelli, while lawyers for the producer have dismissed the charge as "ridiculous". They also point out that Miss Minnelli had a slew of bodyguards monitoring her at all times during the marriage.

But the papers do state that the star confided in a number of people about her concerns, including the actress Mia Farrow and concert producer Ron Delsener.

Miss Minnelli's legal team, meanwhile, is arguing that it is Gest who violated the pre-nuptial agreement "by seeking to learn the circumstances of the infection that was disclosed to him during the relationship, after unprotected relations".

The case goes back to court at the end of this week.

The allegations are the latest in a series of increasingly bitter and unpleasant slurs being traded by the former couple.

In papers filed in October 2003, Gest charged Miss Minnelli of physical assault, claiming that he had been left with "throbbing pain, headaches, vertigo, nausea, insomnia, mood dysphoria and phonophobia," after the marriage.

As acrimony mounts between the pair, Gest and Miss Minnelli are reported to have each hired private detectives to spy on one another.

This is the latest instalment in an exceedingly turbulent past few years for the Liza with a 'Z' star.

Aside from her failed marriages, she has been treated for alcoholism and in recent years has suffered bad health with a number of operations on her knees, hips and throat. Most recently she had encephalitis.

This is probably too mean or too obvious, but I have to say it:

It's probably because they never slept together.

True....but everyone acts like children when it comes to divorce....the more items they have...and this includes children and pets...the smaller the emotional age.

So true, Weldy.

But fighting over a divorce settlement for three years and accusing your ex-spouse of having herpes to break your prenup is pretty extreme. Good God, these two need to just get it over and done with and quit airing their dirty laundry in public.
