I think that along with Fade to Black, The Unforgivens are the best songs Metallica has produced. I prefer the original.
Here are the lyrics for both:

The Unforgiven

New blood joins this earth
and quickly he's subdued
through constant pain disgrace
the young boy learns their rules

with time the child draws in
this whipping boy done wrong
deprived of all his thoughts
the young man struggles on and on he's known
a vow unto his own
that never from this day
his will they'll take away

what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never be
never see
won't see what might have been

what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never free
never me
so I dub thee unforgiven

they dedicate their lives
to running all of his
he tries to please them all
this bitter man he is
throughout his life the same
he's battled constantly
this fight he cannot win
a tired man they see no longer cares
the old man then prepares
to die regretfully
that old man here is me

what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never be
never see
won't see what might have been

what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never free
never me
so I dub the unforgiven

you labeled me
I'll label you
so I dub the unforgiven

The Unforgiven II

Lay beside me, tell me what they've done
Speak the words I wanna hear, to make my demons run
The door is locked now, but it's open if you're true
If you can understand the me, than I can understand the you

Lay beside me, under wicked sky
The black of day, dark of night, we share this paralyze
The door cracks open, but there's no sun shining through
Black heart scarring darker still, but there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining...

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you....

What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?

Lay beside me, this won't hurt I swear
She loves me not, she loves me still, but she'll never love again
She lay beside me, But she'll be there when I'm gone
Black heart scarring darker still, yes she'll be there when I'm gone
Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone
Dead sure she'll be there...

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you....

What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?

Lay beside me, tell me what I've done
The door is closed, so are you're eyes
But now I see the sun, now I see the sun
Yes now I see it

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you....

What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I'm the one who waits,
The one who waits for you....

Oh what I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you.... (So I dub thee unforgiven....)

Oh, what I've felt....
Oh, what I've known....

I take this key (never free...)
And I bury it (never me...) in you
Because you're unforgiven too....

Never free....
Never me....
'Cause you're unforgiven too....
Oh

I like Unforgiven II better. For the longest time the first was my favorite Metallica song but there is something about the second that seems more...ghh I don't know....I feel like there isn't any climax in Unforgiven but II acheives that for me, gives me goosebumps and stuff.

I like the opening guitar riff for unforgiven 2, both songs are great, so its hard to choose between the two of them... But I regrettably must say that I prefer the second, as great as the first is...

Im also a big fan of Fuel, imho one of their better songs. I also love Nothing Else Matters.

Covers of Turn the Page and Whiskey in the Jar are also good, but having not written them I dont really count those.

Unforgiven II, mainly because I listened to it during our holidays in Ibiza a few years ago. Sundown at the beach bar and the young barkeeper had an excellent rock music taste

I feel the musicianship of the 90s era Metallica is far superior, and enjoy it more. However, I really LOVE Ride the Lightning, and parts of the other 3 80s albums.

It's really been interesting listening to hear how Metallica has evolved from a thrash band in the early 80's to what they are today. Kill 'Em All sounds *nothing* like songs off of Reload. That to me, though, is the sign of a great group. It shows that they have matured as musicians, and aren't content to do the same thing CD after CD. True, it ticked some people off, but I respect Metallica for doing what they want to do.
I'll confess to having KEA through the Black album and S&M. To the question at hand, I really like both songs, so, I can't really pick one over the other.

Unforgiven 1

I like the lyrics for Unforgiven 2 quite a bit, but he music is blah. And I even liked most of Load and Reload
