LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress and model Mischa Barton was arrested and jailed early on Thursday on suspicion of drunken driving and of driving without a license, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The 21-year-old performer is best known as a former star of the Fox network television drama "The O.C.," about the intrigues surrounding a group of young people living in an upscale coastal community in Orange County, California.

Barton was pulled over in West Hollywood shortly before 3 a.m. when sheriff's deputies noticed her vehicle straddling two lanes of traffic and she failed to signal when making a turn, according to an arrest report on the sheriff's department Web site.

"During Ms. Barton's detention, it was determined that she was an unlicensed driver and was driving while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage," the report said. "Ms. Barton was arrested and transported to West Hollywood sheriff's station where the booking process was completed without incident."

She was jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail, deputy Hugo Macias said.

The celebrity news Web site TMZ said Barton also was detained on suspicion of possessing illegal narcotics, but Macias refused to comment on that.

The English-born actress made her movie debut in the Sundance Film Festival favorite "Lawn Dogs" in 1997 and also has appeared in such films as "The Sixth Sense" and "Notting Hill."

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Mischa Barton was arrested and briefly jailed on Thursday on suspicion of drunken driving, marijuana possession and driving without a license, Los Angeles police said.


Barton, 21, best known for her role as Marissa Cooper on the hit Fox television drama "The O.C.," was pulled over while driving over in West Hollywood around 3 a.m.

Police said her vehicle was straddling two lanes of traffic and said she failed to signal when making a turn.

"During Ms. Barton's detention, it was determined that she was an unlicensed driver and was driving while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage," the official report said.

She was also suspected to be in possession of marijuana and an unidentified controlled substance, said Sgt. John Hocking.

Barton was jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail and spent about seven hours behind bars before being released, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

Barton's publicist did not return calls for comment.

The English-born actress made her movie debut in the 1997 Sundance Film Festival favorite "Lawn Dogs" and appeared in such films as "The Sixth Sense" and "Notting Hill."

Barton is the latest in a string of young Hollywood celebrities to be arrested this year, including Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan.

The 'St Trinian's' star - who was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) last week - visited Beverly Hills' Good Shepherd Catholic Church to seek forgiveness for her sins last Sunday (30.12.07).

An onlooker told gossip website TMZ.com: "Mischa came out of the church looking very pious, wearing a white, virginal dress. She was carrying a church brochure."

The 21-year-old former 'O.C.' star was stopped by police for straddling two lanes of traffic while driving through West Hollywood last week. She was charged with DUI, possession of marijuana and driving without a valid licence and could face jail.

The Good Shepherd Catholic Church is the same church 'Prison Break' star Lane Garrison visited in December 2006 after he was involved in a fatal car crash. He is now in prison for vehicular manslaughter.

Paris Hilton's parents also attended mass there while she was in prison for driving with a suspended licence.
