The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I recently listened to Drum's Not Dead by Liars on Thom's recommendation.

It was shit.

those are also in believe it bitches

its songs

like Open Pick, Four Minute Warning, Spooks, and Go Slowly that are sketchy :(

I like Spooks, but that one is a stretch...maybe as an instrumental like Hunting Bears, or made into an intro/coda for one of the other tracks.

and for the record Let Down is a happy song :madspit:

Really man, how do you figure? It's about life being a crushing, disappointing drudgery where you're "hysterical and useless". :(

the music it self is happy..very melodic and the music itself is happy:mad:

the 1st half of the song talks about being let down

but by the second half...

You know, you know where you are with,
you know where you are with,
floor collapsing, falling, bouncing back
and one day, I am gonna grow wings,
a chemical reaction, [You know where you are,]
hysterical and useless [you know where you are,]
hysterical and [you know where you are,]

you know where you are with
you know who your real friends are

I am going to grow wings
Overcome all let downs

a chemical reaction
hysterical and useless

being let down is just a chemical reaction...its useless

and Let Down is one of the most uplifting radiohead song eva!!

and I  it

it also happens to be my favorite song

I wouldn't say the music is "happy" or "upbeat", but it is melodic, and very beautiful. It has a melancholy to it that offsets the lyrics quite well. Really though, the music doesn't tell you whether or not a song is dark any more than the score of a movie tells you precisely what is going on onscreen. No Surprises has very happy, childlike music, but is one of the most tragic rock songs of all time. This is why that thread on Atease makes no sense. OK Computer is far more depressing and gory than Kid A and especially Amnesiac (which is a more accessible, fun Kid A).

Let's look at the lyrics of Let Down.

Transport, motorways and tramlines,
starting and then stopping,
taking off and landing,
the emptiest of feelings,
disappointed people, clinging on to bottles,
and when it comes it's so, so, disappointing.

Really doesn't get much more straightforward than that. To the narrator, life is repetitive, emotionally empty, and the only way to ignore this is through numbing yourself, which people do by "clinging on to bottles" (alcohol).

Let down and hanging around,
crushed like a bug in the ground.
Let down and hanging around.

You hang on to life, hoping for something positive to happen, but it doesn't, and you are again left disappointed.

Shell smashed, juices flowing
wings twitch, legs are going,
don't get sentimental,
it always ends up drivel.
One day, I am gonna grow wings,
a chemical reaction,
hysterical and useless
hysterical and

This part reminds me of Fitter Happier with its advice on how to live life without actually living it. There seems to be a bit of hope with the "grow wings" part, but essentially, it's just a chemical reaction...hormones...not actual reality.

You know, you know where you are with,
you know where you are with,
floor collapsing, falling, bouncing back
and one day, I am gonna grow wings,
a chemical reaction, [You know where you are,]
hysterical and useless [you know where you are,]
hysterical and [you know where you are,]

Again, tiny bit of hope, with an excuse for having that hope at the end. It's a chemical reaction. "One day you may know where you are, but as for now, you don't, and to think otherwise is merely a bit of beta endorphin-based giddiness that will pass as soon as reality sets in".

Not too positive from my point of view.

I accept your interpretation

but to me "Let Down" is about not being Let down

Shell smashed, juices flowing wings twitch, legs are going
Don't get sentimental, it always ends up drivel

Stop being let down...its useless..
anyway thats what I get from the song

and don't even get me started on Lucky

oh and Kid A and HTTT are by far more "dark" than OKC

I mean

The National Anthem
How to disappear completely
morning bell
idioteque
and especially Motion Picture Soundtrack are not exactly "happy" songs
