Messageboards really aren't what they used to be either. All the chat threads around here are ghost towns, and the forum itself is much slower. I think it's a shame really. I find most of the currently popular forms of social media to not be half as good as messageboards, but I suppose the nature of the Internet beast is that it's constantly shifting.

I just don't get a proper sense of community out of Twitter, Tumblr, etc., and Facebook is becoming unbearable thanks mainly to bloody old people.

I've made so many great friends through messageboards, especially this one. I really can't imagine a similar dynamic on other forms of social media, especially since I take a while to really get to know people. Plus I guess I'm a bit old-school-Internet in my attitude that regularly posting more than a couple of times a day is the behaviour of teenage attention whores. The rapid turnover of content on some forms of social media makes it seem to me impossible to keep up with and hard to develop a sense of community.

I had a close female friend for several months earlier this year. A few years back she and I had been coworkers, and acquaintances, but it wasn't until this year that we really started hanging out.

She turned out to be pretty batshit crazy. For one, she was barely 21 and still in college, with no job, but desperately wanted to have a baby. She was single, but begin attempting to recruit sperm doners, including my gay brother (he was not amused at her popping the question).

Eventually she ended up hooking up with this guy. They had unprotected sex ONE time. He got her the morning after pill, and she took it. She was really worried and convinced that it wouldn't work. Her period was due in less than a week. It came on time. End of story, right? No.

A few weeks later when the guy was out of the picture, she referred to the incident as a "pregnancy scare" (fair enough), and told me that she had taken a bunch of pregnancy tests. They'd all been negative except one, which we can assume was a false positive. It happens.

But no, fast forward a few more weeks, when I guess she was craving attention, so she posted on Facebook that she has gotten pregnant and had a miscarriage.

Now this made no sense to me at all, and I ended up questioning her about it in private. She got super offended and made another post reiterating that her miscarriage did in fact happen. She and I pretty much stopped talking at that point.

Looking back, she had other moments of crazy. Her mood was a constant shift between gleeful when people were paying attention to her, and horribly depressed, and making suicidal threats when people were not. She once told me she was going to drive her car off the bridge on her way home, because she had no one to go home to. I told her I didn't ever want to hear any of that shit again.

That is not just me being harsh. I'd dealt with her enough by that point to realize that her threats didn't have much substance to them, but were rather attempts to get someone to come rescue her/be with her/take care of her. I'm convinced that the only reason she wants a baby so bad is so she can have somebody that unconditionally loves her, and that she thinks that she would never be sad again if she had a baby.

It makes me weary of trying to get close to new people, in case they turn out just as batshit.

As I learnt very powerfully when I was 17-18 and thought it was possible to do something with regards to the Darfur genocide. The failure of awareness campaigns to do anything, even a decade later, made me the deeply cynical person I am.

Oh my god, there's somebody at my work EXACTLY like this. She straight-up propositioned the gay members of my department in the belief they "wouldn't care" if she got pregnant.

In the end, organised some casual hookups away from work and had the damn child.

There are crazy fuckwits everywhere. You just have to work out good ways to weed them out. I have no time for dull people without any curiosity, and I can usually tell whether or not somebody is interesting by how they react to basic introductory stuff when I meet them, like when I tell them what I do. If they don't know any curiosity there (especially since I'm a historian and there's so much they could conceivably ask), odds are they won't show much curiosity elsewhere - won't keep up with the news, won't try new bands, won't want to visit different places, etc.

Every year there's a reenactment of a battle during the Seven Years' War held in the town across the river from mine. They have tons of booths run by folks in period clothing selling all kinds of yummy foods, as well as handmade goods and antiques from the approximate era.

One booth had a lot of little bits like beads and buttons and buckles, as well as dried porcupine, otter, alligator, and raccoon feet. Some other booths had nothing but leather and furs.
