A cynic would say that it's all academic and Atlantis doesn't really exist at all. But that would be boring.

I remember reading about this really cool JRR Tolkien thing where he had this recurring dream of this verdant green land being swamped by a giant tidal wave. He never told anyone about it, but later found out his son had exactly the same recurring dream. He believed it was about the sinking of Atlantis and called it an "inherited racial memory". Any Tolkien fans might be interested to know that his writing of the sinking of Numenor is an interpretation of Atlantis.
