Where do YOU live?
Ok, here is the deal:

Between my birthday (12/6), Chanukah and Christmas, I've received approximately 300 dollars worth if Itunes gift certificates.

I have about 3,000 songs on my Ipod, so, basically, everything from the past and that's current that I want, I have.

So, this seems like a good time to try out some new stuff. Now, I'm not looking to go far off genre, my tastes are usually rock oriented, though, appreciate some classical pieces now and then, like the occasional hip hop tune, like Sarah Brightman and Alison Kraus, but, largely, rock is my thing.

Some bands I like a lot: U2, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Zeppelin, Elbow, Dredg, Who, Catherine Wheel, Beth Orton, Doves, Interpol, REM, 10,000 Maniacs, Sundays, Living Color, Guns N Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eisley, The Church, Rush, Alice in Chains, Genesis, Van Halen, Arcade Fire, Lush, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction, Beatles, Springsteen, Echo & The Bunnymen, 80's music in general, Elton John, Metallica, Neko Case, etc......I think that's enough to give you an idea of my taste.....

So, my question is, based on the above, can any of you recommend some artists to me? Could be an older act you loved that was underappreciated but sort of obscure....a new act that has yet to make a name for themselves who you like a lot, etc...

I just want to check out some new stuff, and by new, I mean new to me. Heck, even if it's a popular band, maybe they put an album not many people listened to.

So, any help you could provide to me would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

Happy belated b-day.

If you haven't already, check out;

I actually have Dredg in my list, and, I do like a # of the bands you listed above....not familiar with Muse, though, and someone at work mentioned them to me today, so, I will definitely check them out. Also, not familiar with Muthmath, Kasabian and Stars, so, again, thanks!!!

Definitley Maybe - Oasis
(What's the Story) Morning Glory? - Oasis
Up the Bracket - The Libertines
The Soft Bulletin - The Flaming Lips
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips
Is This It? - The Strokes
All Mod Cons - The Jam (Down in the Tube Station at Midnight

 )
Unknown Pleasures- Joy Division (Some might say this is where Interpol got their sound from)
The La's - The La's
The Smiths - The Smiths
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

Those are some of my favorite albums...

Radiohead are on my original list of artists I like.....

I LOVE The Soft Bulletin, great album....All Mod Cons, though, do not own that and I like a few Jam songs, so, will add that to the list, thanks!!! wow, Race for the Prize just came onto my Ipod, wow, good timing. :) Not familiar with the La's either, so, thanks.

I'm a big fan of The Stone Roses, too, wish they could have kept their act together, would have been interesting to see how good they might have gotten.

Martha, thanks for the Wolfmother suggestion, I have them on my Ipod and love the first few songs....sorry if people are mentioning acts I already am familiar with, I could not possibly list every band I like, but, there are already some good suggestions in the thread, so, keep it up, people!

Thanks!!!!

You could donate some of your giftcards to me! :D

Just kidding.

Mia, thanks, only have heard of Guster, so, perfect! I own you one. One what? No idea. :)

By the way, of all the avatars and signatures floating around interfernce, your Oh, Snap, as well as that photo of Bono with the "Oh Shit, Son" is easily my favorite.

Check out Porcupine Tree. I recommend songs such as Piano Lessons, Trains, The Rest Will Flow, and Lazarus, or if you want a whole album, Stupid Dream.

Also, if you don't mind longer songs, given Spock's Beard a go. I'm only familiar with the Day For Night and Beware Of Darkness albums, but they're fantastic. A shorter number I highly recommend is Skin. As far as longer songs go, look out for The Doorway and Walking On The Wind.

IF you haven't heard Kasabian yet, be prepared to be blown away. They're that good! Get both of their albums.

Muse is awesome and fits well with the style of music you like. Their latest album, "Black Holes and Revelations", is fantastic but took me a few listens to appreciate it. Absolution is simply amazing.

Stars might be a stretch for you as they have a softer indie feel.

MuthMath has had a great debut album.

Muse, definitely check them out.
Songs such as : Starlight, Citizen Erased, Suppermassive Black Hole, Time Is Running Out, Muscle museum, Knights Of Cydonia, Stockholm Syndrome ect ect

The White Stripes - The Whole Elephant album should get you :)
But songs like , Hardest Button To Button, Blue Orchid, The Denial Twist, Seven Nation Army, Fell In Love With A Girl, Hotel Yorba....ect ect.

Don't deface my thread!!!!

Axver, I gots me some Crowded House and Midniight Oil on my Ipod already, but, I am gonna check out your earlier recommendations.

I am not a huge White Stripes fan....some songs I like a lot, but the rest, just not my cup of tea....heard a few Raconteurs tunes, same deal, not surprisingly.

Downloading 2 Muse albums right now, and, Kasabian is on deck...we'll see if I get blown away!!!! :)

Exploring new music is exciting.

Keep up the recommendations, please!!!

Judging by some of the artists you listed, I think you'd like Junetile. They've only got Work on iTunes, which is a compilation featuring songs from their EPs and their first album, but it's still worth checking out. If you can get your hands on their album All Things (Un)Clear, do so, because the compilation is missing "A Painting" and "Baad." The album's streaming on their website, if you're interested: http://www.junetile.com

"Dreamaway" is their best song, and thankfully it's on Work.

Some of my recommendations:

If you like Bob Dylan, iTunes has released all of his songs in one package. It's expensive, but I'm pretty sure you'd have enough to get it, and you get about a bajillion Dylan songs--all of his albums, some live and bonus material, etc.

Some albums I recommend (going through my own iTunes):

The Clash--London Calling
Bob Dylan--Highway 61 Revisited and Time Out of Mind are my favorites, along with Before the Flood (though I'm not sure iTunes has that one)
Joe Jackson--Look Sharp!
The Pixies--Come On Pilgrim, Doolittle, and Surfer Rosa
both of Ray LaMontagne's albums (the iTunes exclusive material is also quite good)
The Rolling Stones--Exile On Main Street and Some Girls are my favorites, though most 70s-era Stones music is great
Talking Heads--Sand In the Vasoline
The Velvet Underground--The Velvet Underground & Nico
Wilco--Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

I'd also recommend some Lou Reed, maybe a greatest hits package. My favorite of his more recent albums is Set the Twilight Reeling. If you like 70s Neil Young, you might really like The Band and Joni Mitchell. If you like Neil Young for his twangy country-influenced tunes, you might enjoy Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams's album Car Wheels On a Gravel Road.

Okay, that should be enough

Ok, so, 2 Muse albums added....one Guster...2 Kasabian....will now add Work by Junetile and see how that goes.....Bonoismymuse, I've got almost everything on your list, minus the Dylan!! At least that shows you and I have similar tastes. :) I might check out Sand in the Vasoline, don't have a lot of Talking Heads in my library.

I have 2 Snow Patrol songs, but, no whole albums.....might go that route, too....and, mutemath's debut album will be mine before tonight is through! :)

I almost saw Cat Power in concert a while back, but, something popped up last second and I had to bail. :(

Eyes Open is excellent. I'd get that by Snow Patrol and as for Cat Power The Greatest is amazing (old Memphis style blues) but You Are Free is my absolute favorite.

I have the song Shut Your Eyes from Eyes Open, love it...though, the singer, at least on that song, reminds me of one of the singers in America....go figure. :) Think Eyes Open might be next...thanks....
