Perry Farrell has always bugged the ever-loving snot out of me. I cannot stand to listen to him sing even one note.

I think Accelerate is the only new release for me too this year. Other than the cd version of In Rainbows, I can't think of anything else. What else has come out this year?

ETA: Never mind. I found that thread talking about new releases so far. Nick Cave and Racounters seemed popular. Don't know either one.

It's from Farrell's post-Jane's Addiction band, Porno For Pyros.

You should be all over it, Zoots. It's from the 90s.

Yeah I know. I'm not very knowledgeable on Jane's Addiction or Porno For Pyros. :reject:

I do remember seeing a PFP video on MTV back in 93 or something but that's it.

This is the official RANDOM music talk thread, right? So here goes nothin'.

Corianderstem if you are out there at all I was wondering if you could reply to the following...

You are the only kind soul on this forum who has admitted to being appreciative of Girls Aloud and their British sex-pop musical stylings. I'm going to list some of my top Girls Aloud tracks and I was hoping you could let me know what some of your favorites are as well...

1. Sound of the Underground (Their debut single...will always be #1 in my heart)
2. Long Hot Summer
3. Biology
4. No Good Advice
5. Love Machine
6. Wake Me Up
7. Life Got Cold
8. Watch Me Go
9. Whole Lotta History
10. Swinging London Town

(And of their newer stuff my favorites are probably Call the Shots and the B-side Hoxton Heroes)

Anyone else...feel free to reply with your favorites as well....or with any positive or negative feedback of any kind. Thanks!

Perry's voice certainly isn't for anyone, but Jane's was a quintessential 90's band, hugely influential and genre bending. You take Perry's bizarre electro-hippie lyrics, Dave Navarro's L.A. Metal guitar work, and Steven Perkins' polyrhythms which take it into tribal directions at times (this guy is in my opinion the best drummer of the last 20 years), and you have a really unique sounds. Some of the songs are short and punky, some long and Zeppelin-esque epic.

It's hard to say what album one should start with, because all three are fantastic. I imagine most people would suggest their breakthrough (and swan song) Ritual de lo Habitual, and I won't argue with that. Personally I prefer Nothing's Shocking (the middle album), and some of my favorite songs are on the first, self-titled album (which also has a great cover of The Velvet Underground's Rock & Roll, segueing into Sympathy for the Devil.

You really should give them a try.

Well, I can't say I relate to their sexy side or anything, and I don't think I could name any of the members or even pick them out of a line-up, but I can easily name a handful of their songs I love.

First of all, I think their new album is AMAZING and am impatiently waiting for some of the used copies on Amazon to drop a bit in price, because even the used ones were pretty expensive. Stupid import prices.

1. Call the Shots (one of the most amazing pop songs I've heard since Kylie's I Believe In You)
2. Wake Me Up
3. Jump (hate the original, love the cover)
4. Teenage Dirtbag (ditto! who knew it would make such a great cover?)
5. Deadlines and Diets (I'm not a fan of pop ballads, but love this one)
6. Sound of the Underground
7. No Good Advice

I just think they're really fun. It's a shame not so many people seem to know about them in the US. The Spice Girls were huge, why can't these guys be, too? Instead we get stuck with those shitty R&B-flavored girl groups like Pussycat Dolls and Danity Kane. :yuck:

The video for Ritual's lead track "Stop":

(great California livin')

Video for their biggest hit Been Caught Stealin':

(not my favorite, but definitive to an extent)

These two songs alone show the range of this band. But here's Ritual's closer "Classic Girl" a truly beautiful ballad (even Cori might like it!) to show what they're also capable of:

This is taken from the long-form video Gift, and features footage from Perry's Hawaiian wedding ceremony.

Enjoy!

Huh, I didn't know that. I'm definitely curious to hear that ... although I'm not sure I'll like Perry's voice on two of my favorite songs.

Oh, and to be fair, I did kind of like "Stop" back in the day. It's the one song of theirs I remember liking at least somewhat.

It's also essential to hear another well-known track, Jane Says. It's live on the first album, and was re-recorded for Nothing's Shocking (featuring Perkins on the steel drum), which is this version:

Aalso, here's my personal favorite song from Ritual, the epic, Then She Did, written about Perry's mom, who died when he was.

It's not as famous as the album's other epic, Three Days, but I think it's better:

And then there's my all-time favorite Jane's song, from the first album, a pretty little ditty called My Time, complete with harmonica!

I do have Ritual. Other than Been Caught Stealing which I love, I don't even remember much of the rest. It's high time I gave it another listen!

Listening to Ritual right now after ages and.... I can't say I'm really feeling these songs except for Been Caught Stealing. :slant:

To me, he's one of those singers whose vocals continuously hover a mere inch away from being irritating, but never actually cross the line. So I don't find his singing a problem.

I've got Ritual de lo Habitual and Strays and enjoy them to various degrees, don't really care about the band enough to dig deeper into their catalogue.

My favorites are really the slower songs: Classic Girl, Then She Did, Of Course, and Obvious.

Three Days is impressive, but a little over the top. Stop is a great kick-off song, the next two don't really do it for me and are a bit dated. And I've never been a fan of Stealing.

I'd recommend Nothing's Shocking for a bit more consistency. Ted, Just Admit It is a great track, along with Jane Says, Ocean Size, Summertime Rolls, Had a Dad, Mountain Song, and Idiots Rule (which features Flea on trumpet!).

I did see you buy some other albums some weeks ago. So Accelerate isn't the only one!

And he arrived over here with a new album in his suitcase.

Just listened to this song on youtube a couple of times. (cannot find the official video but found some fan made video) I have to say I'm digging this tune a lot but the chorus is kinda stupid I agree.
