Hi!

Some years ago, I discovered a film in a listings magazine from Japan which intrigued me with the title alone, "AKIRA". I read through the article in that mag and it was highly praised so, out of curiousity, I went along to the local cinema in London to see it!

My jaw dropped in the first few mins at the sheer beauty of the film and its in animation too which is a far far far cry from the usual sh*t from Disney et al! Heres a brief plot summary:

"Kaneda is a bike gang leader whose close friend Tetsuo gets involved in a government secret project knowned as Akira. On his way to save Tetsuo, Kaneda runs into a group of anti-government activist, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader. The confrontation sparks off Tetsuo's supernatural power leading to bloody death, a coup attempt and the final battle in Tokyo Olympiad where Akira's secrets were buried 30 years ago."

Throughout the whole film, I was entranced and amazed at the brilliant storyline and utterly fantastic animation which I have not seen before (it had some amazing scenes of the city, Tokyo too).

So anyone here seen the film or has seen any manga films at all? If you did, let me know your favourites or your thoughts on Akira. I became a bit of a convert to manga art since watching Akira and only now I came across a new kind of cartoon at this website. www.brokensaints.com which takes reading comics out of the bookshop and onto the net! While they may not be anything new there but the difference is that the designers have cleverly used Flash Macromedia software to the tilt! When you get to the website by the way, you can catch up on the storyline so far by clicking on the Classic Site button on right hand side of screen

cheers

Yeah of course I have seen it, its one of the breakthrough anime titles, awesome film, also Blood - The Last Vampire, Ghost in the Shell and Evangellion are good (I am not a massive fan but I have seen enough to know that it can be ultra-stylistic cool).

meeeee!!! :D :D :D

I love anime films. and "Akira" (Katsuiro Otomo) is one of my favorites... the manga books are really cool too, you have to see them cuz their design is excellent and the drawings are brilliant.

I like to draw with that style and I learned a lot seeing anime and manga stuff. "ghost in the shell" is the best (in my opinion)

I've seen Akira, loved it. Also loved Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, though they are much lighter fare. My girlfriend is a big anime geek (I'm the Buffy/Angel/Firefly geek). She's been to convetions like Otakon, etc. She reads a lot of manga. The only anime dvds I own are the Ceres: Celestial Legend series. Very good stuff.

I'm not a big fan of Akira or action anime. I'm more into angsty drama, really weird or storybook type anime. But if you like Akira see if you can find a movie called Memories. It's actually 3 short stories that are sort of unusal and is from the director of Akira. I'm not sure if it's available commercially in English, but if you ever get a chance to see it that's a good one. Since you like Akira, 2 other anime movies I'd also recommend are Angel's Egg and X/1999.

Tetsuoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

 Akira

one of my favourite films ever made.....

I convinced one of my best friends on my media production degree course 4 years ago to do her dissertation about Manga films.....unfotunately she had never seen a manga film in her life. I lent her Akira and many others (eg fist of the north star etc) and was really jealous of her thesis subject. Unfortunaly she didn't bother researching it properly and didn't do very well :| . Maybe i should have done my dissertation about Manga instead of Bertolt Brecht and his influence on contemporary british theatre :| :| :|

I saw Akira, pretty good. Although, save for couple movies I generally dont care for anime. The big eyes with the triangle noses just seem to turn me away.

Akira:
good movie
good soundtrack
good action toys
good manga

has everything! :shifty:

I'm a big Anime fan, some weeks ago I used to have a Sorata Arisugawa (X by CLAMP) avatar...

but best anime ever is Cyborg Soldier 009, the three versions, end of discussion, followed by Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion

Katsura's work is awesome, btw (Shadow Lady, Video Girl Ai, DNA 2, I"s, etc.)

I´m a big fan of anime, in my city there are not stores where I can find manga, but I always see the tv series, and my favourite is sailor moon
Darien = Mamoru ---> don´t know why he reminds me Bono
I love inuyasha, blue seed, Sakura mail (sof hentai) :reject: etc...

Another anime fan here, though I must say I'm more a fan of the ultra-cute Studio Ghibli school (Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Laputa...) than the slightly more "screwed up" stuff like Akira and NGE. Not that I don't like those :)

Currently enjoying Naruto, its really good fun :D

I hear Ghost In The Shell 2 is pretty much the same as #1.

I'm interested to hear if anyone has seen Urotsukidoji, a notorious horror hentai film featuring tentacle sex. Btw, if you do a search on "tentacle porn" you will get results  . I did it for research.
