We all get down in the dumps on occasion, some more than others. So what helps you through? For me, as I imagine for many others as well, I find solace in music. I could not imagine life without music. It is to me, what makes the world round, what feeds the soul, what inspires love. It *is* love, it *is* magic. I have been listening to all sorts of music lately, some new, some old, some rediscovered... What music brings you comfort? (non-U2)
One band that has saved me, that has brought me strength:

Crowded House

~ Distant Sun ~

"Tell me all the things you would change
I don't pretend to know what you want
when you come around and spin my top
time and again, time and again...

...Still so young to travel so far
Old enough to know who you are
Wise enogh to carry the scars
Without any blame, there's no one to blame

It's easy to forget what you learned
Waiting for the thrill to return
Feeling your desire burn
And drawn to the flame...

...I don't pretend to know what you want
But I offer love

Seven worlds will collide
Whenever I'm by your side
Dust from a distant sun
Will shower over everyone..."

~ You Better Be Home Soon ~

"...I know I'm right
For the first time in my life
That's why I tell you
You'd better be home soon

So don't say no, don't say nothing's wrong
'Cause when you get back home maybe I'll be gone

When the nights go down
When you've had your fill
When there's nothing left

It would cause me pain
If we were to end it
But I could start again
You can depend on it..."

~ Locked Out ~

..."and I been locked out
and I know we're through
but I can't begin to face up to the truth
I wait so long for the walls to crack
but I know that I will one day have you back..."

Ok, so maybe all those lyrics aren't the happiest, but it makes me feel good, feel encouraged. Sometimes it's more than the words too you know? It's the beat, the voice, the whole package.

Share with me your happy music and I'll think of some more.

I disappeared in you
You disappeared from me
I gave you everything you ever wanted,
It wasn't what you wanted

these guys have been a comfort since I was 13-14

The Verve

~History~

I wander lonely streets
Behind where the old Thames does flow
And in every face I meet
Reminds me of what I have run from

*In every man, in every hand
In every kiss, you understand
That livng is for other men*
I hope you two will understand

I've got to tell you my tale
Of how I loved and how I failed
I hope you understand

I've got to tell you my tale
Of how I loved and how I failed
I hope you understand
These feelings should not be in the man

In every child, in every eye
In every sky, above my head
I hope that I know
So come with me in bed
Because it's you and me, we're history
There ain't nothing left to say
When I will get you alone

Maybe we could find a room
Where we could see what we should do
Maybe you konw it's true
Living with me is like keeping a fool

In every man, in every hand
In every kiss, you understand
That living is for other men
I hope you know that I am me so come on
I'm thinking about history
And I'm living for history
And I think you know about me
Cause I am

And one and one is two
But three is company
When you're thinking about the things you do
And you're thinking about the things you do
I want to tell you my tale
How I fell in love and jumped out on my bail
I hope ypu understand there's more in a smile than in a hand
In every sky, in every kiss
There's something that I migght have missed

Why am I going to
A place that now belongs to you
But you were weak and so was I
Let's pick it up, let's even try
To live today, so why not smile
Don't dream away your life coz it is mine
Is that a crime (repeat) this life is mine
The bed ain't made but it's filled full of hope
I've got a skin full of dope
I've got a skin full of dope

~She's A Superstar~

Here she comes
Seven suns
A burning flame
She got my love
Got my head
But it's all the same
She climbed so high
I don't know why
High, on her own

And I know
She's in the air
And I don't want it to go
I can breathe the air
But I don't want it to go

She got my woe
Got my hand
Took the dreams
Right outta my head
She bought the world
I paid the bills
I took those pills
It was wind in her sails
She climbed so high
I don't know why
High, on her own

And I know
She's in the air
And I don't want it to go
I can breathe the air
But I don't want it to go

~Sonnet~

My friend and me
Looking through her red box of memories
Faded I'm sure
But love seems to stick in her veins you know

Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord
Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord
My lord

Why can't you see
That nature has its way of warning me
Eyes open wide
Looking at the heavens with a tear in my eye

Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord
Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord
My lord

Sinking faster than a boat without a hull
My lord
Dreaming about the day when I can see you there
My side
By my side

Here we go again and my head is gone, my lord
I stop to say hello
'Cause I think you should know, by now
By now
By now
By now
By now
By now
Oh, by now
Oh, by now
Oh, by now
Oh, by now

..again, not lyrics to go out and hug complete strangers and sing "the hills are alive with the sound of music"..but very uplifting for me..

Funny, Angel, I have Crowded House's Distant Sun in my sig right now

They are a band that lifts my spirits, but they also have a touch of melancholy (sometimes more than a touch) which I love. I can't stand much unrelenting happiness.

I'll get mocked for this, but I think an album like Duran Duran's Rio is great for lifting the spirits--real get-up-and-go music, silly lyrics, just fun (but also quite musically excellent.)

Mysterious Ways puts a big fat smile on my face.

I don't listen to Bryan Adams much any more, but some of his songs are great for a good mood--Summer of 69, stuff like that.

Led Zeppelin has some songs that make me really happy and energetic. The Song Remains the Same, Out on the Tiles, Rock and Roll, Heartbreaker.

I've been listening to Midnight Oil for a few days and though their lyrics tend to be serious and political, I can get pretty happy listening to them. Just the energy, I guess. They have an early song called Back on the Borderline that reminds me of Boy--the same spirit.

The thing is, I really don't gravitate toward happy music. I prefer songs that make me thoughtful, or even songs that tend to be dark and mysterious.

Yes!!!! Me too!!! What is 'happy' to someone maybe feckin' depressing to others... lol, or not.

But I too, prefer more deep melancholic music, but maybe even in a happy package.

Right now I am listening Hothouse Flowers, and while their songs drip in the sweet hallelujah sounds of gospel music, they have a real darkness to them as well. Not this one though... (lol)

~ Give It Up ~

I'm coming face to face with my conscience
Coming to an understanding of myself
Clear out all the old cobwebs
Clear the old books from the shelf

This song is inspired by a good man
And his tune
Thinking good of others
Sing Amazing Grace to you
It doesn't really matter if you're all
Jumbled up inside
As long as you know love is
Endless and the world is wide
Give it up share it out
Help who you can
Talk about it

It's late in the morning, close to the time
Mary's in the alley she never stops smiling
Always love to see her - means a lot to me
But I know she has a hard time trying to
Make ends meet

Chorus: Give it up...

Down George Street arcade where the poor children play
Gathering up charity just to help them make their day
Me I was once their age, me I was once young
But I knew I had my family to fall back on

Give it up...
