It was United that did LAX-MEL first. Qantas followed them. LAX-MEL is a difficult route for standard 747-400s, and Qantas got their 747-400ERs. It was similar in the original days of 747-SP operations. Pan Am had to schedule a stop at AKL because the original SPs could not do US West Coast -SYD non stop. They could do SYD-US West Coast non stop. In a few million years from now, Continental Drift will move Australia a bit closer to America, so the distance will be shorter, but 744s will be out of service by then.
