LINCOLN, Neb. - This fish didn't have a chance. A rainbow trout pulled out of Holmes Lake last weekend had double the chance to get hooked: It had two mouths.

Clarence Olberding, 57, wasn't just telling a fisherman's fib when he called over another angler to look at the two-mouthed trout. It weighed in at about a pound.

"I reached down and grabbed it to take the hook out, and that's when I noticed that the hook was in the upper mouth and there was another jaw protruding out below," said Olberding.

He said in his 40 years of fishing, he's never seen anything like it.

Don Gabelhouse, head of the fisheries division of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, said a two-mouthed fish was new to him, too.

"It's probably a genetic deformity," he said. "I don't think there's anything wrong with it."

The second mouth didn't appear to be functional, Olberding said. He has plans for the fish, which don't included mounting.

"I'm going to smoke it up and eat it," he said.

One more piece of evidence to support evolution, check the one in however million example of a mutation causing a significant physiological change, if such a change were to be adventageous in reproductive success then it would eventually be expresed in the entire population.

I almost saw my lunch for a second time, thanks to this thread. :yuck:

If I caught a fish like that, I'd ask the EPA to check the water to see if there were any hazardous chemicals / toxic waste present. This sort of mutated deformity could be very bad news.

I'd also donate the critter to science for research. I certainly wouldn't eat a fish like that! :yikes:

Theres probably nothing wrong with the fish itself, it is obviously a functional organism, it's just like those fruit flies where we alter the hox gene expression so they grow an extra set of legs on their heads instead of antennae. Of course this is a higher vertebrate but still. A good rainbow trout like that could be smoked and eaten with bread and some lemon, its a once in a lifetime catch.

holy shit

the last time I saw someone with two mouths was Paris Hilton at that party the other night

I don't want to think about what she uses em for :barf:
