The year it was in Halifax, that happened too. They gave the fans towels to wave at every game, and Rimouski won over Barrie in the final game. Well, the towel thing wasn't much foresight because everyone threw their towels onto the ice at the end of the game (Rimouski was the most hated team in Halifax that year, since the Oceanic put the Mooseheads out of the playoffs, and Barrie beat Halifax in the semifinals) due to the result. Sure enough, as Rimouski was skating around the ice with the cup, one of the players stepped on a towel and went ass over tip, dropped the cup and the top came off. Everyone laughed hard at that one.

Apparently they didn't do a very good job fixing it, though.

The Stanley Cup is made out of pretty stern stuff. People drink out of it, eat out of it, use it to feed their dogs, play with it in the swimming pool, etc.
