There's only a certain amount of answers you'll come up with, when doing the math correctly. Those answers will ALL have the same symbol next to it. The rest are just filled with random symbols. Notice that the symbols change everytime! So your 0, 2, 9, 17, 18 etc will all have the symbol that's in the ball, the rest will have random symbols.

when you add the digits together and subtract the answer from the original number, you always end up with a multiple of 9. you'll notice that all the multiples of 9 have the same symbol beside them, which incidentally is the same symbol that comes up in the crystal ball.
