After leaving Sarahpalinland, we arrive somewhere that may have been named after her, Cape Catastrophe in South Australia. However, it is not named in her honour! This cape at the tip of Eyre Peninsula was named by explorer Matthew Flinders after a vessel in his fleet came to grief in 1802. Eight offshore islands now are named after the seamen lost in the catastrophe.

And the closest we've had to a traditional Superthread for a while. Huge showing by the Aussie crowd this evening.

Any changes of the masterlist?

Yes, but nothing especially funny.

Chapterhouse: Probably my favourite or something. Read some pretty harsh reviews of Whirlpool recently. Motherfuckers didn't know what they were on about, it's a great thing with music on it!

I've seen A LOT of really harsh reviews of shoegaze albums lately. It seems they're generally along the lines of "the shoegazers had no talent and hid their crap playing behind effects", or "the shoegazers had no talent EXCEPT FOR THIS BAND ZOMG!!!!"

Lush: Great band. Lady vocals! Sometimes pretty heavy. Does Ax listen to them... ?

I have a couple of Lush albums but I haven't seriously listened to them. Suspect I need to do something about that.

Oh, and I'm vaguely amused that while I'm bitching about it getting too hot too soon after winter's conclusion, Ali is still using her electric blanket, AND still wants it on 3!

Sleep well and wussily, Ali!

Alright. Guess I'll wait til I make a thread to check that out.

Yeah, I really refuse to read shoegaze reviews unless the person is familiar with the genre. I'm addicted to it, I can't stay with just fucking Loveless. And I STILL can't understand how people say that was the only album worth listening to in the genre and how it started the whole thing. Here's the stats: Ride released Nowhere in 1990. MBV released Loveless in 1991. Nowhere has songs on it. Loveless has sounds on it. They're both good albums, but one of them was, dare I say, a fucking huge waste of money.

Yeah, gittonit!

The Red Rocks DVD loses so much for losing the snippets.

No "Edge, shut up for a second" during THBAO. No context of Bono climbing up during Electric Co. :sigh:

I was really looking forward to it, but I feel let down by those fuckers yet again.

Shoegazer reviews have a tendency to be fucking worthless, you're right. I really don't get how it is that Loveless has become the defining shoegaze album. Did some stoned hipsters get entranced by the cover or something? I mean, god, it's a diverse genre, and to try to limit it to Loveless is pretty much insulting. I would consider Nowhere to be the definitive shoegaze album. Hell, if I were to write a list of definitive shoegaze songs, Duress and Seagull would be automatic inclusions while I honestly don't think anything from Loveless would make it.

Ol' fat Kevvo of MBV needs to stop bloody pouring money down the drain to make impenetrable sounds. I think the reason I love Ride, Swervedriver, et al. much more is because they use the traditional shoegaze aesthetic to augment their songs, not fucking totally drown them.

Hey Traviud.

Did I tell you I dig the Fleet Foxes album? I told Bonnie but I'm not sure if I told you. It's 3am, forgive me if I have. Reviewed it on RYM and all.

Wait, wait, "shut up for a second" isn't in THBAO?! I can understand not wanting to pay out shitloads in royalties for snippets, but why cut that? It's funny! Ugh.

No snippets. Unbelievable. Can you imagine the Paris show without Gloria in Exit and LWTUA in WOWY? Yeah, so that was good enough for those guys, but they won't pay for as full a concert as they can get excluding I Fall Down. And there are essentially no extras. It's such a bummer.

I'd be really interested to see where Ax's vote goes.

And most likely furious, but your list is certainly a good one.

I've already said I'm open to bribery.

LM would've missed my comment a couple of nights ago that I think his first part beats your first part, but that your second part beats his second part.

Watch as the shoegaze sways me. I'm cranking Duress right now.

Wow, I recommended something to you that you genuinely enjoy?! This is indeed a good day.

I see Your Protector was your favorite. My favorite is Blue Ridge Mountains, but the album's unique atmosphere makes the whole record feel like a single song in parts.

If it means so much, I'll put a PT song on my next DI. I'm flexible.

I think you said you would vote for whoever is losing at the end to get them an extra point. :hmm:

What I don't get is Send In The Clowns has been quite happily reprinted on European editions of UABRS for YEARS.

And it is worth noting they cut the covers from Paris. I imagine Stand By Me and Help would have cost them a fucking fortune.

Ah yes. I'll watch how voting goes and make my decision based on that. Because this really is a difficult decision. I'd say yours is the better constructed list, that second half in particular has amazing cohesion - but Bonnie has Soundhead / Duress / Blue Pedal. And a trio I like so much can mean a lot.

The worst part is that I'll have to vote against one of you at least twice, since I'll obviously vote for my own list when we face off.

And since I've killed the thread, i'll be sure to beat it into the ground now.
