OK, you know how federal parliament is bicameral, i.e. it has two houses, the House of Representatives and the Senate? The state parliament is also bicameral. The lower house, the Legislative Assembly (like the House of Reps), features representatives of local electorates - there are 88 electorates in Victoria, each electing a single member, and Brunswick is your electorate. Like at the federal election for the House of Reps, you have to preference all candidates. The upper house, the Legislative Council (like the Senate), features representatives of Victoria's eight regions. Each region elects five members, so the Council contains a total of forty members, and Northern Metropolitan - the region for which Cleary is standing as an independent - is your region. Like at the federal election for the Senate, in the Legislative Council you can either vote above or below the line.

PS Cool, I didn't know Cleary was running. I imagine he will fare well from my preferences.

The Net Neutrality thing finally just hit me today as something I should be pissed off about.

I should care so much more about the net neutrality thing but it's one of those issues where my inner cynicism has kicked in too strongly. The joys of the Internet Wild West can't last, and in a century or two people will look back on the early days of the Internet and wonder how people coped without various structures, administration, and uniformity - in the same way as many of us would be totally out of our depth if we were suddenly transported back to the real Wild West.

Unless of course you live in Queensland, in which case the voting task is a good deal simpler. And don't we enjoy the benefits of streamlined guvvermint.

We've discussed before, but it's very interesting how having no Upper House in New Zealand has not led to dire consequences (be it in the 46 years before MMP was introduced, or the 18 since when it has acted as somewhat of a check on any risks), while in Queensland a unicameral parliament has clearly not worked out terribly well.

So Tori last night was awesome. It was basically an all request show. I didn't do any of the die hard meet and greet stuff this time, but she still put on an awesome gig and sounds vocally better than ever, more so than in 2009.

The people I sat next to were not so awesome. They spent most of their time with on their phones texting or taking photos, which I'm totally cool with...but turn down the brightness Yo? Then talked loudly, laughed randomly at lyrics during every song for whatever reason and I think they "smoked" one of those e-cigarettes. Even the other people around them were getting pissed off. I mean at most gigs this is fine, but when it's just it's a gig like Tori solo where it's more of a theatre style performance it's pretty unacceptable.

Anyways now I've had my weekly whinge in the superthread I feel better!
