The other B in my life

OK here's my show review, for anyone who is interested.

This was my first Bruce show

I have three albums (The Rising being one of them), and have only read a few recent articles on him (as my friend started giving me the bruce-poison!) and have seen his videos.. So I am a pretty big bruce- newbie.

First of all, he played three hours of music. yeah. 3. And, there is no gap between the stage and the GA crowd, like there is at the U2 show. It's just total pressing up against the stage.

I was a few people back from the stage. With Bruce there are no theatrics, etc, so there's no "song" he comes out to, they just- come out. So different lights go down at different stages and everyone's yelling for bruuuuuuuuce, and finally the house lights go down at 8:30.

I don't even know all the band members names, I know nothing about them as individuals, I barely know stuff about Bruce as an individual (whereas I know things about Bono that only a mother should know). But they all come out and it gets very exciting to see Steve, & Patti's new boobs (she must be anti-bra) and the drummer, whom I remember from watching the HBO special.

When Bruce walked on I just saw him from the Born in the USA cover, yknow, when even I knew who he was, and pretty much FROZE. Tears, mouth dropped open in amazement/shock/fear (lol!) / excitement- you name it. I stayed like that for the next two songs- I remember the bassist: :eyebrow:

He opened with "The Rising" followed by "Lonesome Day" (as is the habit). All those songs that just mean so much and really help(ed) us get through such a significant part of our life, and emotional part, it was sooo moving to hear them live. Pretty much all of the Rising songs I was very very emotional/teary during.

No Surrender

"No Surrender" was next. I don't know who this is, I just know it's off a Bruce-list, I hope it's ok to post it! :uhoh:

but- i should make it clear- this was not me!

"This afternoon, after the Lenny Zakum ceremony, Bruce was shopping and Louis' of Boston, the nicest clothing store in Boston. My dad's friend is across the street shopping and gets a call from someone in Louis' and says to come by because Springsteen was there. My dad's friend goes over to the store and finds out that his car is parked next to Bruce's Cadillac Escalade. He finds Bruce with his two bodyguards. My dad's friend approached Bruce and the bodyguards don't give him any trouble. So my dad's friend goes up to him and tells him how he is a 55 year old groupie and a die-hard from way back. He then proceeds to tell Bruce how my father has told him that the third song has been key lately in the sets. He tells Bruce how he and my father have always wanted to see No Surrender the rock version but it has never been played at a show that either have been to (which is well over 40). Bruce put his fingers to his temples and says that he would try to remember. Well for those of you who were paying close attention at tonight's show, before Bruce played the third song, which of course was No Surrender, he said something along the lines of "This one's by request." How do you like that one???? WHAT A SHOW"

The Fuse Is Bruce

About the band for a second- I found them to be awesome, awesome .. musicans, performers, everything. I loved how they got "into" the songs and would move to the music. I don't mean dance, but i mean slowly move their body or their hand or their instrument to the tempo of the music. That was so awesome and you could tell they were so concentrated, lost -but aware- of what was going on. This was one of the biggest differences for me from U2. I've seen Edge shut his eyes as he played, lost in the song, but this was completely different. It's hard to compare the two so I'm gonna stop doing it, but as far as the E-Street Band goes, I loved that about them and their performances.

Clarence and Steve made most eye contact with the front rows, I think. Clarence was so awesome, made me laugh a lot, a very soulful man, and the way he played that saxaphone gave me chills. I love the sax, and it sounded brilliant. Steven was great, I lovedd the expressions he made as he played- all these weird-cartoon-like faces! lol! The drummer was soooo concentrating on Bruce I think he only looked in the audience once, during his introduction. Every other time I looked at him, he was staring at Bruce, his mouth counting every Four beat.

But honestly, I spent most of my time ogling the Boss. I could NOT take my eyes off him. COULD. NOT. He totally captivated me, I wanted to memorize everything about him, the way his shirt shadowed his body (so thin!) the way his leg started to sweat right where his guitar leaned against it, the way his face twisted up as he SLAMMED on that guitar over and over and over, totally playing it like nothing I've ever seen before..

The Fuse was next, and right before I tap my friend and go, "he is fucking sexy!" to which I receive a high-five. And maaaan did I mean it! The Fuse proved me right- holy mother of censorship!!! The thoughts going through my head just watching his face, his expression.. He stood with his arms by his side, slightly out as if he were about to pull his guns out of their holsters, his eyes squeezed shut tight as he sang this incredibly sexy song..On the edge of your bed you slip off your blouse The room is burning with the noon sun Your bittersweet taste on my tongue.. SO sexy, and there is no way to describe that, except in seeing his thoughts come alive through his music and expression made me have a bruce-gasm! :combust:

Prove It All Night was great- some of the songs were a blur, just in watching Bruce and singing along.. Candy's Room... I knew immediately this was a treat from the way Kim and everyone else started freaking out. I'd also heard a lot of people say how much they love this song. Now, I have to admit I'd read the lyrics of it but never actually heard the song before (yes, quite the Bruce virgin!) but it was verrrry fun and the crowd really got into it!

Empty Sky & You're Missing were next (maybe not correct order) but this was the part where Bruce asked for silence, and got it with the exception of some whistles over his shoulder. It was really gorgeous. I loved how it was just the lights go lower, and then he sings the song. Quite different than U2's stage and outlook on their shows. It really fit the ambiance for a Bruce show (which really is just a rock'n'roll show. Very awesome). I cried through both the songs.. you listen as this music that has held your hand through some pretty difficult days, comes to life in front of and around you and it's overwhelming. Clarence had tears running down his face during "You're Missing" and that was very powerful, and pretty sad.

"Waitin' On A Sunny Day." Awesome, awesome crowd-pumping song. It was amazing how many times I went from tears to glee. Bruce really interacts gorgously with the audience, having us sing the chorus parts, over and over and over. He totally bends the songs around how he wants them, repeating verses random amounts of times, making sure it's perfect or the crowd as particpated as he wants. I loveee his command of the audience and, as everyone told me, how the band can follow him on the turn of a dime- and how they did!

Being sooo close to the front gave us another (!) bonus during this song. Bruce runs and slidessss across the stage and somehow stopped right in front of us. Everyone is touching him, his legs, (he slid w/ his legs under him if that makes sense), and he's GRINNING and leaning back, the crowd is pushing against me and I reach my hand out. I could have easily touched him but I didn't want to- didn't know what to do- then I saw everyone else was so I tentatively touch his abs *rock* and then see his hand is hitting people's so I lift my hand up and was CLASP hands. It was my left hand and his left hand. Me and one other woman had his hand, while the other came to hit more people's hands. We held hands for what seemed like an eternity- a few minutes- I was completely conscious of it (while holding Bono's hand in concert created an out-of-body experience) and staring at his exuberant face- he was SO happy, grinning and shouting, slapping hands with people. I loveddd that moment. For the rest of the show I could still feel his hand in mine and for the next few songs I wouldn't unclasp my hands as I tried to hold the feeling there, if you know what I mean!

"Promised Land" was next, another song I may have heard but didn't know very well, but that totally rocked and I loved the energy with the song. I misheard the lyric, but he sings "If I could take this moment into my hand" but I heard the "my hand" part and GRINNED. heheheh. :)

"World's Apart" is my favorite (haha!) song off "The Rising". I was sooo thrilled to hear it! I totally totally focused on Bruce so I could imprint in my mind the image and sound of him singing this gorgeous song. I taste the seed upon your lips, lay my tongue upon your scars... Let's throw the truth away, we'll find it in this kiss In your skin upon my skin, in the beating of our hearts May the living let us in, before the dead tear us apart. Amazing!! The last stanze I quoted there Patti came over and sang with him sharing the same mic, and they sang with their lips nearly touching, it was very intimate and indicative of the mood of that song.

for really hard-core fans..

OK then the party started. I don't remember much specifically, except pure engery and just incredible, incredible music. He ripped through "The Badlands" and we all punched the air with him and you could just FEEL his intimacy with this music, as if he's lived every line he's written about. "She's The One" was awesome, just awesome. Soo cool to hear it live!! "Mary's Place" was the highlight of this buildup- with incredible crowd encouragement from Bruce, as he strolled up and down and up and down the length of the stage. He introduced the other band members during this song, having a great time with it. That song was a lot of fun. Then he grabbed onto the mic stand (which is bolted to the floor) and people started yelling "bruuuuuuuuuuuuuce" and he makes a face, and everyone laughs and it quiets down and then the yelling starts again, and he pretends to be sick b/c everyone is cheering for him, it's soo cute. He makes all these faces and is hanging onto the mic stand, sort of leaning to the side.

"Countin' On A Miracle" was fun, and then "My Hometown" which he dedicated to Zachem & his family who were there. He sang "your hometown" instead of "my."

Then came a surprise- and he went to the piano by himself, and talked a little, he looked a little nervous, and then sang "For You" which is another song I didn't know, but it was very beautiful with just him. It's cool to hear just his voice and see how powerful that is by itself.

Finally he ended the main set with "Into The Fire", yet another tear jerker!!

The first encore was another favorite stretch of mine. Totally rocked the house. He came out with "Dancing in the Dark" which he just had a really really fun time with, and I started to see a Bruce I'd never seen before, which emerged even further during "Ramrod" when he seriously let it all hang loose. He just started making goofy expressions as he sang, and then would open his eyes wide and look at the audience, and then slam a few chords, and do it again. It was a LOT of fun and he totally let himself go. "Ramrod" was also awesome for another reason-- during the middle of it he jumps down to the lower stage and walks right up to Kim. He grins and turns around and then SHAKES his booty at the audience. It was hilarious. And then as he keeps doing, my friend reaches up and slaps his ass with both her hands- like drumming on his butt. It was sooooooo fucking funny and everyone burst out screaming/laughing/fainting. Bruce, btw, had a BIG grin on his face!! :D :shifty: (This was even put in the Boston paper! lol!)

"Workin' On The Highway" was reallllllly cool, it sounded like something that would be played at a ho-down. They had accordians and, the woman who played the fiddle (was it the fiddle? ) was unbelievableeeee by the way, she came down too- Bruce gestured for all of them and the guitarists/bassist to come forward and line up along the front of the stage with him. It was really cool and the song rocked in that raw form. He led them like in a train around the stage, up behind and then in front again. A really great performance of that song.

"Born to Run" I particularly love (sorry to be cliched! But my friend pointed out- those songs don't become classics for no reason!) and for him to play it live was just awesome. It really rocked and I remember losing my head during the song, and my favvvvvorite lines, I want to guard your dreams and visions Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims and strap your hands across my engines made me totally go nuts and lose it! The crowd, by this time, was SO with him they were practically ahead of him!

They say goodbye but shortly come back on again! With the whole band on stage but in almost-darkness, Bruce being the only one softly illuminated, and at the piano, he starts "My City of Ruins." You guessed it: tears. Unbelievable. All I could think of was how much he touched me seeing him sing this on the Tribute To Heroes. But then he stood up and the lights came on more and they got into the rest of the song, which was beautiful but also fun. It doesn't all have to be sad! Really gorgeous rendition.

Bruce spoke then about supporting different groups, and how it was our responsibility (I heard a cymbol or drum and knew what was coming next! whoo!) if we were "born in the usa" and they busted into the 'album-version' of this song, not the slowed version they did (on I don't know what tour?). It really rocked (ok, sorry for getting repetitive! it's hard to describe these songs, but they were really really incredible to hear in person!!) It was just amazing to me to hear this song that I remember from when I was a kid and didn't know a thing about music!

faith will be rewarded

Then- "Land of Hope and Dreams." I had never heard this song, but I instantly fell in love with it. Love at first note, at first lyric. Loveeeeeeeeeeeed it. Sooooooooo powerful and soooo affirming. Soooo encompassing and uplifting and joyous. I loved every second of it, every throw of my arm into the air, every word Bruce sang. This Train... What an amazing song, he is so brillant! He walked along the stage again, this time looking into the audience, nodding and making eye contact, saying "yeah" or different things- I just stared at him and mouthed "thank you" over and over, my hands clutched together (yknow, like we were still holding hands lol) and tears in my eyes, and he nodded at me- he knew. He soo knew and really I could tell how proud he was of his music, and that touched me a lot. The band members fell in behind him as he walked all around the stage, up behind it and below (me, I'm thinking he's done!) and then to my surprise he suddenly reappears on stage left (hehe) with the band behind him again, he's walking sort of crunched down, as if they're on a train (ahhh!) Then to finish it off he added "People Get Ready" slowing down the beat and just sinking into the song to end off the show.. Yeah now that I think about it again that's another favorite moment, this song. (Bringing the favorite moment count to 5264.)

They weren't done, however. Back on again with Peter Wolf. Mike was soo gracious and let me scoot against the stage for this where I molested it (haha) and clapped to the beat, and pretty much used it to keep me standing. They sang Dirty Water and it was so awesome, and so fitting for Boston.

:D

Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did :sexywink: :flirt: He is coming back next year and if you do ONE thing next summer- it should be to GET TO A BRUCE SHOW!!!!!!

I taped SNL & am going to watch it in a few.. :hyper:

Martha:  Yes, I know I'm in trouble now. Is there room for two B's in my life? :sexywink:

Sounds like someone enjoyed her first Springsteen concert.

Well I was there too. My 6th Bruce show, one I didn't think I was gonna get to until about 3:40 PM when a friend came across a pair of GA's for me (at face value no less). Sadly way too late to get there and get in the fromt section of the floor, but still got a decent spot mid-floor and could see pretty well (same couldn't be said for the Mrs., will have to get her some 9" heels for next time).
Great show. Highlights definitely "Candy's Room" and "She's The One" for me.
The 3rd time I've seen Peter Wolf join Bruce onstage. This time had a 40-esque moment. During "Dirty Water" bruce led the band and Peter in a march off stage, leaving only Max doing the drum beat, the crowd singin to the beat "I love that dirtyy water" over and over, they turn the lights over Max off, so he's drumming in the dark, and this continues for about 2 minutes till Bruce and Co. resurface and kick the song back in...quite cool.
Not a bad 7 day stretch for me...The Who on 9-27, Paul Mac on 10-1 and the Boss on 10-4...what year is this again?

Oh my gosh Olive.. congrats girl! Feck i'll admit it: I'm definitely way more of a Bruce newbie than you.. :silent: but dizamn now I reeeallly want to go to a concert of his. thx for the great review! sounds incredible.

EXCELLENT REVIEW CARRIE!!

There is no turning back now for you :D

What else can I add..there aren't enough of these  for that man, and that band

It was an incredibly special day and night   :combust:

If anyone wants to see it, here is video of Bruce at the bridge ceremony-just click on the video portion where it says 'watch Bruce sing Thunder Road'
