Bicycle question

I'm looking to get a bike. Nothing fancy, just something used to get me around in the city. The burning question is how do I tell what size I should get? I've googled a bit, but I'm more confused now than before. I'm sure the best way to do it is to go to a bike shop and figure it out, but I'd like to be able to figure it out for myself, I guess.

DO NOT try and figure it out yourself. Have someone size it up for you. You will be MUCH better off in the end (avoiding potential injury, etc.).

I am 5'5" and just got a 17 inch frame. But the bike guy fit it for me. I actually went for the 15 inch.
