Since I'm feeling kind of melancholy, I was wondering what songs most strongly evoke autumn for you? I'm starting off with Ben Folds Five's "Don't Change Your Plans," but that's all I have right now.

Good thread idea! I was just thinking the other day about what songs would sound good keeping a Halloween theme in mind.

Anyway, songs that sound like Fall season eh?

:hmm:

Wake Me Up When September Ends?

Nightswimming?

I actually like both of those. I'm not ashamed to say i enjoy some Green Day. I have lots of September songs, actually

Fiona Apple - Pale September
Johnny Cash - September When it Comes
Ryan Adams - September

Earth, Wind, and Fire doesn't quite work though.

The Vines - Autumn Shade (Part I and II)

Everclear - Fire Maple Song

The Kinks - Autumn Almanac

Hall & Oates - Fall in Philadelphia

How about James Taylor's September Grass? Or his October Road?

Loose Fur/Jeff Tweedy/Wilco's "Laminated Cat" (aka "Not for the Season")

" Candy left over from Halloween
A unified theory of everything
Love left over from lovers leaving
Books, they all know they're not worth reading
It's not for the season

When autumn comes you sit in your chair and you stare
At the TV square
Hiding in the deep end
Weeding out the weekends

Winter comes and the days all start late
There's motion on the boughs where the dark shapes prowl
Feeling out the feelings
Feeling out the feeling

Candy left over from Halloween
A unified theory of everything
Love left over from lovers leaving
Books, they all know they're not worth reading
They're not worth reading"

Van Morrison often has an autumn feel.

When the Leaves Come Falling Down

I saw you standing with the wind and the rain in your face
And you were thinking 'bout the wisdom of the leaves and their grace
When the leaves come falling down
In September when the leaves, come falling down

And at night the moon is shining on a clear, cloudless sky
And when the evening shadows fall I'll be there by your side
When the leaves come falling down
In September when the leaves, come falling down

Follow me down, follow me down, follow me down
To the place beside the garden and the wall
Follow me down, follow me down
To the space before the twilight and the dawn

Oh, the last time I saw Paris in the streets, in the rain
And as I walk along the boulevards with you, once again
And the leaves come falling down
In September, when the leaves come falling down

Follow me down, follow me down, follow me down
To the place between the garden and the wall
Follow me down, follow me down
To the space between the twilight and the dawn

And as I'm looking at the colour of the leaves, in your hand
As we're listening to Chet Baker on the beach, in the sand
When the leaves come falling down,
Woe in September, when the leaves come falling down
Oh when the leaves come falling down
Yeah in September when the leaves come falling down

When the leaves come falling down
In September, when the leaves come falling down

When the leaves come falling down in September, in the rain
When the leaves come falling down

Green Day's not bad at all, no :). I like what I've heard from them. And I agree with quite a few of the mentions here already.

Other stuff...umm...well, the Finn Brothers' Everyone Is Here works pretty well for fall, namely songs like "Disembodied Voices" (kinda fits for a late night listen), "Edible Flowers", or "All The Colours" (fits with the fall colors thing, after all!).

That's all I can think of right off the top of my head right now...*Goes off on CD search*.

Yo La Tengo - 'Autumn Sweater'

There is no better song for autumn, and that is a fact. If you don't know or already love this song, punch yourself in the face and/or stomach as hard as you can for your indiscretion.

Fiona Apple - Pale September

Also, Fiona's version of Sally's Song from the re-done Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack. It's from a Halloween movie so I think that qualifies.

Plus the song just has a certain chill to it. I think anyone who enjoyed the film will enjoy this cover.

I've heard that and I agree, she does an excellent rendition of it .

Your mention of Nightmare Before Christmas reminds me-never hurts to check out stuff Danny Elfman's done, be it with Oingo Boingo or from his movie scoring career. He just seems to fit this time of year like a glove :p. As for specific songs related to him, let me get back to you on that.

The entire UF album. I was just telling Mr. Blu today that I don't know why, but when the weather (finally!) turns cool here, I love to drive around with my windows open & UF playing on repeat.

"A Rush of Blood to the Head" (the album) works for me, also "Love is Hell" by Ryan Adams, it's great as autumn/winter album

A lot of Death Cab for Cutie material works for this time of year.
