Little hand says it's time to rock and roll.
So I just saw Elizabeth Town (why Cameron, why? Die, Kirsten, die...) and it got me thinking: what movie has the best soundtrack. Of course we will all differ, but I'd like to see some lists. Here's what I need.

Name of Movie:
Notable Artists:
Stand out Tracks:

Git R Dun

I'm gonna go with a couple that people are gonna HATE:

Movie: Friday
Notable artists: Dr. Dre, Mack 10, Cyprus Hill
Stand Out Tracks: Take a Hit, Keep Your Heads Ringin'

A good mix of mid 90's hip hop (when it was still half-decent, and some old school "Gangsta Shit" :)

Movie: Judgement Night
Notable Artists: Del, House of Pain, Ice T, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Helmet, Faith No More
Stand out tracks: The missing link, Just another Victim, I love you Mary Jane, Fallin'

The best mix of grunge/metal bands in the early 90's with some established hip hop artists.

Cameron Crowe wins for best movie soundtrack hands down:

Movie : Singles
Notable Artists: Pearl Jam, Soungarden, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pimpkins, Jimi Hendrix
Standout Tracks" State of Love and Trust, Breath, Would?, Drown

Name of Movie: Leaving Las Vegas

Notable Artists: Sting , Mike figgis

Stand out Tracks :

Angel eyes
It's a lonesome bold town
My One and only love

by Sting

ben and sera theme

and lonely teardrops by Michael Mcdonald , which is the central song in the movie but not on soundtrack cd

Movie: Garden State

Tracks: ALL OF THEM!!!!!

Knew that was coming sometime.

Movie: Almost Famous (what do you know, more Crowe  )

I'm not going to list tracks or artists because the entire soundtrack is great and perfectly embodies the film.

Cameron Crowe and Wes Anderson are the soundtrack kings.

One of my fave soundtracks in College was With Honors

It introduced me to Grant Lee Buffalo and Kristen Hersh

Stand out tracks:

Duran Duran - cover of Thank You
Grant Lee Buffalo - Fuzzy
Kristen Hersh and Michael Stipe - Your Ghost
Pretenders - beautiful cover of Forever Young
Belly - cover of Not Unusual
Sanctuary - The Cult
Babble(aka Thompson Twins) - Tribe

Damnit, got beaten to Garden State.

Stand out tracks:
Remy Zero - Fair
Frou Frou - Let Go
The Shins - Caring is Creepy
Coldplay - Don't Panic

I'm gonna second this vote. What a phenomenal soundtrack, and unlike many others, most of the songs are unreleased, or were written for the film. State of Love & Trust is better than almost everything on Pearl Jam's debut album, and Drown is perhaps one of the top 3 Smashing Pumpkins songs ever. It's them doing Sonic Youth. 2 brand new Paul Westerberg songs (Waiting For Somebody is an instant classic), a great song from Pearl Jam ancestors Mother Love Bone, and there's also a cover of Led Zeppelin's Battle of Evermore by the women from Heart (under the AKA The Lovemongers) which sounds scarily close to Robert Plant.

I guess it's a bit dated because it's early 90's alternative/grunge rock for the most part, but it's just fucking solid.

movie: amelie
artist: yann tiersen (he wrote the whole album)
songs: all of them

Movie : Cruel Intentions
Notable Artists: Placebo, The Verve, Blur, Counting Crows, Aimee Mann
Standout Tracks: "Every You, Every Me," "Bittersweet Symphony," "Coffee and TV," "Colorblind," "You Could Make a Killing"

You have all obviously never heard of a little movie called "Rattle and Hum".

There's this guy with this song "Freedom for My People," and then there's Jimi's version of "Star-Spangled Banner." Other than that, I can't say I was impressed.

'Singles' is fucking awesome, but in addition to others mentioned:

The Crow (the first movie, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure etc.)
Heat (well Passengers for one, Moby, Lisa Gerrard etc.)
Natural Born Killers and Lost Highway are pretty cool as well.

Clueless had a fun soundtrack

The Muffs cover of Kids in America
Supergrass-Alright
Luscious Jackson/
World Party/
Radiohead
Lighting seeds
The Smoking Popes
Beastie Boys
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Coolio
Velocity Girl
Jill Sobule
Counting Crows
Cracker

I love the "Clueless" soundtrack. I also love just about any Cameron Crowe movie soundtrack.
To add a new one to the mix, I do like listening to the soundtrack of "She's Having A Baby". I know it's very 80's, but I think it had some great songs in it.

Oh I forgot about that one. She's having a baby

That's how I got into Kate Bush

and OMG Woman's Work makes me teary

I had it on tape I need to get that one on CD

Name of Movie: Pretty In Pink
Notable Artists: Psychedelic Furs, OMD, Suzanne Vega, INXS, The Smiths
Stand out Tracks: 'If You Leave' by OMD is still the fucking best!
