I love how they're still going all fangirl and singling out Bono.

President Bush last week: "We'd like to thank all the celebrities who participated in Idol Gives Back including Bono "

Ryan last night talk to people at Farmers Market: "Our contestants have worked with some amazing mentors this season like Bono:hyper:"

At this point, even I'm like, "Guys it's over, Bono went home."

AI Recaps May 9th
The Results

Results night, results night. Also know as five minutes of booting someone and 55 minutes of filler. What would our Wednesdays be without it?

In the first few minutes, Paula and Simon waste our time by switching seats and imitate each other. Simon does the seal clap (but forgets to keep his arms straight), and Paula rubs her moobs. I look at my watch. We’re just five minutes into this?

And in case anyone forgot what happened Tuesday night, we get an overview of the top 4’s performances. We also wonder why Barry Gibb sounds like Sean Connery, or should I say “Saturday Night Live’s” Darrell Hammond doing Sean Connery on “Jeopardy.” I half expect Barry to say, "That's not what your mother said last night, Trebek".

After Ryan’s Man in the Street interviews (20 feet away from the studio), the summer tour is promoted. If you ask me, only about 3 of the top 10 are worth my hard earned cash.

Pink is the first performing guest. This is odd considering she dissed AI last year for not showing real artists. Yea, nothing says “pure artistry” like Pink. But does she have a new CD to promote? Of course, she does, which is why she’s on the biggest show in America. Her performance is crap, and I wonder if we can vote her off and keep the final four.

Now it’s time for a pimpmercial. “You Really Got Me” is the theme. I like the slightly “Hard Day’s Night” vibe. Finally a pimpmercial that doesn’t make me cringe. Too bad it took a whole season.

Ooh, the Idol challenge is just so challenging! I’m really going to have to rack my brain to come up with an answer.

It wouldn’t be results night without a group sing. There were quite a few technical difficulties, and I’m not just talking about Melinda’s mike problems. The final four give one of the most off-key and pathetic group sings I have ever seen on AI. Did they take lessons from Sanjaya? They end the group sing “Chain Reaction.” I have a pain reaction. I wouldn’t be surprised if Barry Gibb got insulted after that performance and stomped off refusing to perform.

Because we need more filler, Ryan plays therapist and gets the Idolettes to discuss their deepest, darkest secrets, including KiKi wanting to kiss Simon again. Freud would have a field day with that confession.

Fox Studios needs to promote yet another blockbuster wannabe, so the final four get to see an early screening of “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.” Looks like a bunch of special effects and not much else. Then we get to meet the stars of this flick. Ryan flirts with Jessica Alba. Please, Ryan. You’re not fooling anyone.

Now AI is morphing into Oprah, and we get more secrets from the Idols, including baby pictures, back stories, and lots of tears.

In a group huddle on the AI Seal of Failure, Jordin is the first to be announced safe. But before Melinda, Blake, and KiKi can find out if they are “Stayin’ Alive” or going “Home,” Barry Gibb comes out to sing. I guess he wasn’t too upset of the final four butchering his songs. Why does he look like the Geico Caveman’s grandfather? And he’s wearing very tight trousers, but how else is he supposed to hit those high notes? I could not understand a word he was singing. It’s sad to see these legends falter in the autumn of their careers.

Elimination time, finally! My girl Melinda is safe and so is Blake. That means LaKisha Jones leaves us. I’m not too surprised; she seemed to be losing steam and votes as the season progressed. I do think she’s very talented. I love her voice, and her rendition of “And I’m Telling You (I’m Not Going)” is one of my favorite performances on AI ever. KiKi gives a great sing out, and I really liked how she got into the audience and connected with people. Perhaps if she had done more of that (she was kind of cold onstage), she might have stuck around a bit longer. Good luck, KiKi.

I liked that Bill Maher was in the audience.

was that really him!?!?!

i saw that guy, and thought, "wow, that looks just like Bill Maher," but i didn't think it was actually him. hasn't he talked about how much he dislikes AI?

I'm getting tired of Blake. Seriously, the guy can't sing at all compared to the divas. It's sad.

Anyone else see that Paula is having her. own reality TV show? I mean WTF?!?!?! Seeing since everytime she opens her mouth on Idol I want to jump into my TV and smack her senseless I don't think I should watch this how:wink:

It was definitely him. I rewound to get a good look at his girlfriend (apparently he dates only black porn stars but at least this one isn't a foot taller than he is, lol, and she was quite lovely). I don't remembering him talking about disliking AI but it's the kind of thing we all have a sort of love-hate thing with, right?

It was reported today (by a couple of people attending last night's show) that Barry Gibb fell down into the band area after finishing his performance, he did get up with the help of the staff and said "I'm still here!".:| Poor guy.

Celebrities tend to change their look and keep up with the times. Not Barry. I believe that he is stuck in the past with his "fashion". He really looked bad last night.

the singing was kind of painful, too. :(

she was my favorite. i think she had the best voice on the show.

sadly, she's the least "fuckable." and that matters in this kind of competition.

still, i'm sure she'll never have to work in a bank again.

100% correct.

I believe Bill used to date video vixen Karrine "Supahead" Stephens. Then again, didn't we all?

He didn't look very good last nite. Very elderly and frail. Just didn't age well. That's sad that he fell.. Poor guy:(

poor Barry

Great recap GG, as always :applaud:

And that was definitely Bill Maher. Seacrest even mentioned him by name when they showed him.

OMG!!! Check out this from tmz.com :lmao:

Blake's singing the national anthem at Friday night's Seattle Mariners game vs. the Yankees! :hyper:

I love how Simon made so much noise about Seattle sucking during the auditions ... and just look who's in the top three! A Seattle-ite! (OK, Bothell is technically a suburb, but still!)

Please tell me he's going to beat-box the anthem...that would be just brilliant. I might actually start to sort of like him if he did...or not. But it would be cool.

I'm actually hoping he doesn't. It's bad enough we get singers throwing in 5,263,632 extra notes into the anthem. We don't need a beat-boxing version.

I'm curious to see how he pulls it off - he's not the strongest singer, and it's a tough song to sing. He might have to beat-box just to cover his flaws!

from mjsbigblog.com:

The Final 3, Melinda Doolittle, Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis have a busy weekend ahead.

They’ll be filming hometown visits in the next couple of days. The video packages will be included on next Wednesday’s results show. The Top 3 sing 3 songs on Tuesday–one they pick, one chosen by media mogul Clive Davis, and one chosen by one of the judges. Each contestant is assigned a judge who picks a tune for them.

During the visits–at least this is how it’s gone down in the past–a town official will announce the contestant’s judges choice song.

Season 5’s #3 contestant, Elliott Yamin will also be on hand Wednesday to perform. That’s gotta be sweet, ’cause a year ago he was eliminated from the competition at 3rd place. Thank you TPTB for finally bringing back an Idol to perform on a results show. That will make up for being force-fed Simon’s X-factor winner, Leona Lewis, who is also slated to perform on Wednesday.

Blake Lewis has beautiful weather and a big crowd for his mini-concert in Seattle today. The local Fox affiliate is updating a picture page and has video–an interview and performance. He sings the 311 song “All Mixed Up” plus an original tune with a loop machine and chaos pad. For his mini-concert, Blake sang 5 songs, including Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know,” Jamiroquai’s “Virtual Insanity,” an original song, “She Loves The Way,” and he backed up special guest Sir Mix-A-Lot on the rapper’s famous “Baby Got Back.” In an interview this morning, he said that he thought Jordin Sparks would take it all, but that his goal was to make the Top 10 and then the Top 4.

Melinda Doolittle was met by an enthusiastic crowd at Belmont University where she was a student. She sang “Home” and “Since You’ve Been Gone.” More coverage plus pictures from her trip to Belmont. They named a street after her, “Melinda Doolittle Way.” More from the Washington Post. Melinda’s mom says she was tone deaf until she was in the 7th grade… Also, she was a Belmont University mascot, “She wore a hot, sweaty bear costume and jumped around in the name of school spirit.”

Jordin Sparks was met by fans at her high school today. The Phoenix Fox station is covering her homecoming here.

And that site also has the song listed that Simon Cowell chose for Jordin to sing (it's right at the top, so you've been warned if you don't want to know). :shifty:

Baby Got Back! AWESOME! Ha ha haaa...

He did just fine on the anthem at the Mariners/Yankees game. No beat boxing, no vocal gymnastics. He had one or two wince-worthy notes, but very wisely took the final high note on "free" as a lovely falsetto, rather than trying to belt it out of his range and embarrass himself.

Nicely done, Blake. You ain't the best singer left standing, but you did yourself and Seattle proud.

Ah good times. I'm a huge M's fan this weekend too, as they're playing the Yankees :(

Not a big fan of the Clive/judges pick night, but oh well.

Didn't they used to have a night where they brought back singers who'd been eliminated (maybe in the Hollywood rounds) and let people vote for them? I swear I remember something like that in the earlier seasons (2, 3 maybe?) Not that I miss anybody this year, but I really think they did that in the past.

So Blake was performing his own stuff, wonder how that went. While I don't much care for him as a vocalist I have to give him credit, as he clearly brings a lot to the table beyond just singing. He seems like the type of artist who would actually benefit more from NOT winning, and maybe having a bit more artistic freedom to put out what he wants. We'll see I suppose.

I've always wondered how many of the contestants do their own arrangements of the songs. Blake does a lot of that, it seems, which gives him huge points in my book.

The first year or so in the rounds where they're being voted into the top 12, the judges had a "judge's choice" round, where they brought back their 5 or so favorites that hadn't been voted in by the viewing public, and picked one. That's how RJ Helton made it in during the first season, with that infamous "losers" quote by Simon that almost led to a brawl between Simon and Randy as RJ looked awkwardly on.

Is that what you're thinking of?

And yeah, go Ms! They typically do well against the Yankees ... unless it's the playoffs. :grumpy:
