this is a great website. five people so far have lost their jobs because of it.

I do live in a bubble; reading through the fb and twitter comments that are being called out on this site, my overwhelming thought is 'wow, there really are people who think like this' out there AND think it's perfectly acceptable to espouse their shoddy views from the rooftops . . . they walk amongst us *shudder*

and  to this thread being back in the LS; I know I don't contribute much but always enjoy reading what my fellow antipodeans are up to and now you're easier to find :sexywink:

Though anybody who invokes the term "nanny state" has automatically lost any debate. It's intellectual laziness of the highest order, along with "politically correct".

To me it's just a big ol' restriction on basic social rights, and reeks of double standards since the Government is too pussy to hit out at the casino. It's just a stupid answer to a problem caused by a few individuals. I have been on all nighters in Adelaide. It is never so bad as to do a bullshit fix like this, and there's nothing that makes it stand out as being worse compared to other cities.

It's not even that I like doing all nighters - I would gladly never do one again. I'm usually out by 3 or so. But this is just such an absurd stretch.

:hmm: If a ban on liquor sales from 4-7am a 'nanny state' does make, then what's Utah?

I'd say I'm sorry for what just happened to Australia in the World Cup ... but of course I'm fucking delighted! What a game, what a result, what a tournament so far.

Though I am sorry that we get Ponting back on our soil sooner than we may have otherwise expected/hoped.

I have to vote tomorrow :sigh:

A paper in Bendigo featured a letter to the editor about trains. The picture the paper used? Train tracks... the ones leading up to the gates of Auschwitz :|

Holy shit, that's awful. (and to the Auschwitz photo too... wtf guys)

Any news on the cause? Speed, drink or both I guess. Shit like this just shouldn't happen. Hope it wasn't anyone you knew.

nah, no one i knew. there were four occupants, a 17yo boy and 16yo girl are dead, the 22yo driver was airlifted to the Alfred and later died, and a 16yo is in critical condition.

it was 10am, so you'd think there was no drink involved, but speed definitely was. that road is 80ks but is notorious for people travelling well in excess of 100ks.

this, so many times over ~ such a senseless, senseless waste ~ I know the agony of that knock on the door and it's something from which those left behind sometimes never get over ~ glad it was no one you knew, but I am sorry that it even had to happen

as for that photo to which you refer; there is just no excuse for such insensitivity, none at all

God I fucking hate Carlton Draught ads, and I hate even more their stupid fucking slogan. "Made from beer"? So ... it's not ACTUALLY beer? Well I guess that explains a lot.

No they fucking aren't, that opera ad is the most annoying ad for a product that isn't Brut or Today Tonight!

Fresh burnout marks after 'vigil' at scene of fatal Werribee smash | Herald Sun

oh yes, this is Werribee for you, people. juvenile graffiti, a Jack Daniels sticker, "vigil" burnouts and the bogan symbol.

this comes after it was revealed that one of the victims dropped out of school in year 8, and judging the photos i've seen the people involved seem to be a bit "underprivileged".

makes me sound horrible, i know. i've got compassion, this should never have happened and three people should not be dead, it's a tragedy, but so often these things involve cheap alcohol, baseball caps, hoodies, commodores and the like.

What's contradictory is that the article then goes on, just a few lines after saying she dropped out in year 8, to say that "the three teenage victims were students at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College".

Aami Stadium (Football Park) didn't take long to be adopted by the public, nor did Etihad (greeted with a very "fucking Arabs" attitude by those who tried their damnedest to mispronounce the word, and being the Telstra "Dome" and Colonial before that).. I'd like to think it will always be Subiaco (imagined in Cometti's 90s commentary voice) to me, but the media hastily popularises new naming rights of events/stadiums.

Bank of Melbourne is back. Westpac have reintroduced the old local banking brand after missing for a decade or so since the takeover, while the St George brand has been kicked out of Victoria :)

I dunno, it took me a long time to say Etihad instead of Telstra Dome (especially since I'd never heard of Etihad airlines and had no idea who or what it was named after)... but then it took me a long time to say Telstra Dome instead of Colonial. I guess calling it Docklands simplifies matters but it's something else I'd have to get used to. *L* :setinmyways:

I think the t-shirt I got (with all the Aus/NZ dates) says Subi... :hmm:

Hah, didn't know St George had been vanished!

I can't decide if reading some of those fb posts has made me feel physically sick, or if I just ate too much chocolate after lunch. I suspect the former.

I wonder if it would have been worse if the ignorant bigoted fucktards had actually been in any way articulate or shown any evidence of having passed primary-school English.

Christ that makes me furious. There's a reason I like living in my nice little apolitical bubble.

</rant>

PS: And yes, I do agree that naming, shaming and firing those people is a good thing. I just get a shock to my comfortable blissfully-ignorant worldview to realise that people like that are real (which isn't to say I didn't already know they were, but reading it is rather confronting).
