I never knew that South Africa was a country until I was in college. When people referred to South Africa, I just thought they were talking about the southern part of Africa in general.

I have an uncle who has lived in Los Angeles for years ... growing up, I would always hear my grandma refer to "John in LA."

For years, I thought he lived in a city named Ellay, and Los Angeles was a separate city.
