"OOH MANDELA, WHAT A FELLA!"
Bono and Strummer write tribute song
20.dec.02

Bono, Joe Strummer and Dave "Director of Honest" Stewart have written a song in tribute to Nelson Mandela. Speculation that the words go "Ooh Mandela! What a fella!" is almost entirely unfounded, but you never know do you?

The song is actually called "48864" which we assume is Nelson's former prison number, rather than his phone number without the area code.

The tune will be performed at the Aids awareness gig we told you about last month, with performances from Queen, Coldplay, Ludacris, Jimmy Cliff, Ms Dynamite, Macy Gray, Shaggy and Nelly Farturdo.

"We can think of no better time, place or cause for us to return to the stage," said Queen's Roger Taylor, although Freddie Mercury won't be performing on the account of the fact he's been dead for 11 years.

Queen are no strangers to playing gigs in South Africa, as they played Sun City in the 80s when dear old Nelson was doing bird.
