(12-18-2002) U2 Going For Harder Sound on Next Album - LAUNCH

NEWS - U2 Going For Harder Sound On Next Album

The direction of the next U2 album is beginning to take shape.

Guitarist the Edge gave LAUNCH this preview of what he's looking for in the follow-up to 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind: "Right now, my instinct is to make a very raw kind of guitar, bass, drums--an album with a lot of attitude and a lot of that kind of life force, vitality that I associate with guitar bands in full flight. That's kind of the feeling I want to put into our next record."

For his part, frontman Bono recently told the Chicago Tribune, "We'll get back into the studio soon. We're halfway through a record that will burn down all our good works!"

The group is planning a late 2003 or early 2004 release, and has already worked on about six songs at recording sessions in Monaco and at the band's own studio in Dublin.

Two new U2 tracks are featured on the band's new greatest-hits collection, The Best Of 1990-2000--"Electrical Storm" and "The Hands That Built America"--and the Edge told LAUNCH that "Electrical Storm" hints at what might be coming from the group in the future. The other new song is "The Hands That Built America," also featured on the soundtrack to director Martin Scorsese's new film, Gangs Of New York, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz. The movie opens Friday (December 20).

-- Darryl Morden, Los Angeles and Gary Graff
