NEWS - U2's Bono, Shaggy, Macy Gray Set For Mandela AIDS Benefit Concert

U2 singer Bono, Shaggy, and Macy Gray have all agreed to perform at a February 2 concert in South Africa being organized by former South African President Nelson Mandela to raise funds for South Afria's AIDS crisis. The concert will be held on Robben Island, a rocky outcrop off Cape Town where Mandela was a prisoner during South Africa's apartheid era.
Michael Jackson, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Elton John, and Janet Jackson have also been approached to play the show, named Mandela SOS.
"The concert will focus on the growing impact that AIDS has on human life, not only in South America, but throughout the world," said Mandela in a press release. In a press conference announcing the event on Friday (December 6) Mandela said, "HIV/AIDS is not only a health issue but has risen to become a human rights crisis."
A global telecast for the event is being planned. More details on the final lineup should be available in the coming weeks.
