?It?s not about charity,? it?s about justice and equality,? Bono told the opening night audience for the week long Heart of America tour.
Speaking to 2,300 people at the Lied Center for Performing Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska, he was joined by actress Ashley Judd, four-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong and a 10-member childrens choir from Ghana. It was the first stop in a seven-city tour, organised by the new campaign group DATA, aimed at urging Americans to do more to fight the spread of AIDS in Africa.
?You know what ?? asked Judd. ? A $4 shot can prevent a mother from transmitting the HIV virus to her infant.?
The tour is winding its way through Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Tenessee and there is strategy in the itinerary.
?There is a sense of community, of family, a certain decency that we need to convince the politician,? said Bono. ?There is a moral compass in this part of the country that reads clearly when it knows the facts.
?A preventable, treatable disease is killing 2.5million Africans each year, leaving behind generations of orphaned children. This generation of Americans has the opportunity to change history.?
US aid to Africa is the lowest in proportion to the nation?s wealth of any rich country in the world, according to DATA ? which stands for DEBT, AIDS, TRADE in AFRICA
Bono closed the evening in Nebraska by debuting a new U2 song called ?America's Prayer.?
