DOC'S ALARM AS HIV SOARS 25%
By Gavin Martin
NEW cases of HIV in the UK look set to rise 25 per cent this year
Health experts voiced huge concern, saying it was vital to "once again educate people about the importance of safer sex".
By the end of September, 2,945 new diagnoses had been reported, said the Public Health Laboratory Service. There were 2,354 new cases in the same period in 2001.
Dr Kevin Fenton, an Aids expert at the service, said: "We were very concerned last year, this is even more disturbing.
"We are not only diagnosing infections that were acquired many years ago. HIV is a current, not historical problem." Dr Fenton said about 1,500 gay men were probably contracting HIV each year in this country.
In addition, there are significant increases in heterosexuals contracting infection abroad, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
U2 singer Bono is furious at the handling of the Aids crisis in Africa by Europe and the US.
In a radio interview on World Aids Day tomorrow, he will say: "We have the drugs and we're not sharing them.
"History, indeed God, will our judge on this one."
