IOWA CITY -- Bono, singer for the Irish band U2, will speak about Third World debt relief and AIDS in a lecture Dec. 2 at the University of Iowa Memorial Union.
The lecture, "Heart of America: Africa's Future and Ours," will be held in the Main Lounge at 7 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets will be required for admittance.

Tickets will be available beginning at 11 a.m. today at the University Box Office in the Union.

One ticket will be given per person; approximately 1,600 will be distributed.

Tickets do not guarantee admittance.

A live video feed will be shown to the overflow crowd in the Union's Second Floor Ballroom.

Bono, who has led U2 through hit albums such as "The Joshua Tree" and "All That You Can't Leave Behind," has spent much of the past three years working to educate people about the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

He has visited the continent several times, including one high-profile tour in May with U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill.

Bono will be recognized in February for his work on the issue by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the United States, which will present its 2003 MusiCares Person of the Year award to the singer.

Other speakers still are being lined up for the December event at the UI. Check www.uiowa.edu/~lectures for updates.
