ONE love, blood, life
A statement from Jamie Drummond, executive director of DATA (Debt AIDS Trade Africa), about Bono's speech
On Friday, November 14, DATA co-founder and musician Bono will speak in Toronto, asking Paul Martin to build on Canada's commitment to provide generic AIDS drugs to poor countries by tripling Canada's contribution to the Global Fund, pressing other countries to do the same, and keeping Africa on the agenda of the G8 economic summits. The following is Drummond's statement on this event.
"Bono and DATA are committed to working with people who can make a difference in the lives of the poorest. That means leaders like George Bush and Jacques Chirac, who have committed to trebling their nation's support for the fight against AIDS. Bono and DATA have worked with Paul Martin, who has a strong record on fighting global poverty. He will have the opportunity to keep Canada in the forefront of the effort to help Africa and fight global AIDS.
Building on the important Canadian initiative to provide generic AIDS drugs to poor countries, Bono and DATA hope Martin will be able to treble Canada's contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, to raise additional contributions from other countries, and keep Africa on the agenda of the G8."
