NEWS - U2's New 'Best Of' Chronicles A Decade Of Change
11/01/2002
(11/1/02, 5 p.m. ET) -- U2 is preparing for Tuesday's (November 5) release of The Best Of 1990-2000, a 16-track overview of the Irish quartet's second decade. Comprising the albums Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop, and All That You Can't Leave Behind--as well as the Original Soundtracks I collaboration with Brian Eno as the Passengers--that period featured some of U2's most experimental work.
Because of that, U2 guitarist the Edge tells LAUNCH that the new Best Of set represents a markedly different listening experience than U2's The Best Of 1980-1990, which came out in 1998. "The period from Achtung Baby right through to All That You Can't Leave Behind is kind of the story of us taking the idea of a rock 'n' roll band and abstracting it as far as you possibly could, and then reconstructing it again. And, you know, I think that's really, in a nutshell, what we did during that period--at every turn it was really an attempt to find inspiring places to go as songwriters and, you know, artists."
Like its predecessor, The Best of 1990-2000 also comes in a limited-edition set with a second CD of B-sides and remixes.
A companion DVD is slated for release on December 3.
While U2 is not supporting the Best Of album with a tour, the group will be seen on CBS in late November in a concert special filmed at Ireland's Slane Castle in the summer of 2001.
